Brief stop in Beppu in Oita Prefecture, the final Kyushu prefecture to tick off our list. With the typhoon weather front looming, we had limited time to enjoy this famous onsen town with its famous “hells” but we made the most of it. This rough around the edges resort city definitely grew on us. We took the Aso Boy sightseeing train from Kumamoto to Aso, hoping to spend an afternoon near the crater of volcanic Mount Aso but the weather was not on our side so we took an earlier onward connection after buying snacks and bento at the excellent roadside service station.

Kumamoto is a great base for exploring Kyushu and we took advantage of its location to visit the very photogenic Takachiho Gorge in neighbouring Miyazaki. It involved a few hours on the road but the scenery made it worth it. Onwards to Beppu to tick off Oita Prefecture, the last one in our collection.

Sometimes the best days take a little effort. Beautiful day in Miyazaki at Takachiho Gorge. With no sensible public transport, your choice is by tour bus or hiring a car. It was an early start and a long day. I think it was worth it ☺️

Probably not the Nagasaki you imagined. We loved our 24 hours in this Japanese city so much last year that we knew we had to come back. The beautiful surroundings, unique history and easy-to-explore centre hold a lot of appeal. It’s also a stop on many cruise itineraries. We visited the most famous attractions and sights last time so we decided to go off the beaten track to Nozomaki on the peninsula and create our own special adventure riding the local buses.

The spectacularly gorgeous Two Stars 4047 - second time round and it was just as amazing!

Last year, we experienced the afternoon route this Kyushu sightseeing train. This time, we were back for the morning journey. Different route, same delight.

From the coastal scenery to the little details that make Japan’s railway journeys so special, it’s another reminder that some of the best travel experiences are the ones you might never discover without looking beyond the obvious.

Back in Japan - Fukuoka, Kyushu

It’s my 6th time and Tom’s 5th. It’s our happy place and we’ve travelled extensively from north to south but there’s so much more to see, do and eat!! We’ve been planning this longer trip for a year and it’s amazing to be actually on it.

Looking for a great value Mini Cruise with MSC? After previously stating there will be none in 2027, MSC Cruises announced a one-off mini cruise from Southampton on MSC Meraviglia next May. This going to be super popular!

Departing 26 May 2027, the 3-night cruise from Southampton visits Zeebrugge in Belgium and Cherbourg in France. Prices start from £440 per person, and bookings open tomorrow (Tues 20th).

There is so much to do in South Korea and it’s super easy to get around. You can fill your days easily and Seoul allows for some memorable day trips like the DMZ which we did last time and Suwon which we did this time. The food and café scene is totally insane and the bakeries are on a new level. In many ways, it’s also easier to settle into compared to Japan and China so it’s a great introduction to travel in the East. Don’t be daunted, plan it right and you’ll have an incredible time. It’s time for the main event of our adventure as we take a short flight to Kyushu but we’ll definitely return to this fantastic country.
