I’ve been waiting since January to use these pictures of the filming of the Yorkshire Vet memorial garden as they were embargoed until the episode was shown. Fabulous to be involved in such a meaningful initiative instigated by Yorkshire Vet Peter Wright, Alf Wight (James Herriot) would be proud of Peter.

Sparky the Owl enchanted guests at the World of James Herriot Thirsk when author and Sparky’s friend and keeper Tracey Iceton talked about their life together. Sparky’s flying demonstration was enjoyed by all attending. Sparky: My Barn Owl Tale (2026, Cinnamon Press) is Sparky’s semi-(auto)biographical account of life before, and since, she and Tracey met in 2022. The book tells of how Tracey and Sparky met and their journey together as they learned each others’ ways and formed what will hopefully be a lifelong bond. It also includes fictional scenes that explore what Sparky’s life might have been like before she and Tracey met, based on Tracey’s research into the lives of birds of prey in captivity. Tracey expressed how James Herriot’s stories and love and care for animals had inspired her…

Some words just stay with you. 🐾

"If having a soul means being able to feel love and loyalty and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

— James Herriot

Written decades ago by a quiet Yorkshire vet in a small surgery in Thirsk. A man who spent his life caring for animals - and in doing so, showed the rest of us what really matters.

Alf Wight saw something in every creature he treated. That warmth, that quiet humanity, is what made his stories resonate with millions of people around the world. And it's what brings visitors from across the globe to his door in Thirsk, all these years later.

Some things don't go out of fashion. Kindness is one of them!
