The catch with the Empire State Building's view is that you can't see the Empire State Building from up there. Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center hands you the same sweep of Manhattan and puts the Empire State right in the middle of the shot.

The Grand Palace in Bangkok is strict: no shorts, no vests, no bare shoulders, no flip-flops. They do hire out shirts and sarongs, but the rental queue can eat an hour of your day. Wear long trousers and cover your shoulders before you arrive — turn up in shorts and they'll turn you away.
