Perched on a steep bend in the heart of Robin Hood’s Bay, The Laurel Inn has long been one of the village’s most characterful little pubs — and, according to local legend, one with a few smuggling secrets in its walls. ⚓🌊🍻

The tiny 18th-century inn is said to have been linked to the harbour by a hidden tunnel, giving smugglers a secret route from the shore to the pub door. Whether myth or history, it’s the kind of tale that suits this atmospheric Bay favourite.

Today, The Laurel Inn remains a classic stop for walkers climbing back up from the village. There’s no food, just proper pub charm: a cosy bar, real ales including Theakston’s Old Peculier on tap, a good range of gins, a warm fire on cooler days and a friendly atmosphere that keeps locals and visitors coming back.

Grade II listed since 1969 and dating back to the early 18th century, it’s often praised as a “proper chatting pub” — the sort of place where stories flow as easily as the ale.

Dog-friendly, full of history and tucked right in the heart of smuggler country, The Laurel Inn is a true Robin Hood’s Bay classic.

🎣 Ever seen a Cod that collects coins?

Standing proudly on the Dock in Robin Hood’s Bay, the famous RNLI Fish is one of the village’s most iconic landmarks and certainly one of its most unusual.

This cast-iron Cod isn’t just a photo stop… it’s a piece of Bay history.

Here’s what makes this fish legendary:

✨ Weighing an impressive 17 stone (around 108kg / 238lbs), it might just be the heaviest collection box you’ll ever meet.

✨ Keeping watch since 1886, it’s believed to be the oldest RNLI collection box in the world.

✨ Officially recognised as the UK’s smallest listed structure, proof that size isn’t everything.

For well over 130 years, visitors and locals alike have been feeding the Fish, helping raise vital funds for the RNLI and supporting the lifesaving work of its crews.

Next time you’re in Robin Hood’s Bay, don’t just walk past, pop a coin into the Cod’s mouth and become part of its story 🐟💙
