Driving up to the Koules Fortress in Aptera, the landscape opens up and reveals three fortresses that once shaped the history of Souda Bay.

The Koules Fortress, the Izzedin Fortress and the Souda Fortress were built in different eras to protect one of the most important natural harbors in the Mediterranean. Each of them holds its own story — from empires and strategic battles to events that shaped the history of Crete.
