Our recent visit to the Evros Delta near Alexandroupoli once again confirmed why this wetland is one of the most important winter birding locations in southeastern Europe.

Despite freezing temperatures (–4°C with strong winds), the delta hosted remarkable concentrations of waterfowl and raptors. Thousands of Bewick’s Swans roosted at sunrise before departing eastwards, while five White-tailed Eagles were observed actively hunting over the wetlands. The coastal stretch toward Evros was equally productive, with multiple gull species and a good number of wintering waders.

Evros in winter offers scale, diversity and powerful wildlife moments that are difficult to match elsewhere in Greece.
