“Visiting Bhutan was a unique and special adventure. Six Senses lodges exceeded all our expectations, and the transfer of our preferences made us glad we stayed only with Six Senses as we traversed the country. When our flight from Bumthang to Paro looked cancelled, we were confident they would accommodate us at the current lodge or another, taking pressure off.
Our guide, Tandin, was great. He wouldn’t let us open a door or carry our own water or coats, made sure we were fed and watered, provided clean toilets, offered a wifi dongle, and was knowledgeable about Bhutan’s history and culture. He absolutely enhanced our experience.
Each of the five valleys were beautiful, but we hesitate to say visiting Bumthang is a must‑do. Traversing between Gangtey and Bumthang is a six plus hour drive with winding mountains, passes, 90‑degree turns, and not always smooth roads. The typical itinerary flies back to Paro to avoid an 8+ hour uncomfortable drive, yet flights are often cancelled due to weather, denting enjoyment; hence our thoughts are to give this a miss. In Gangtey the rare Black‑Neck cranes migrate Oct–Mar, and we missed them by a week.
The paths were often narrow, over rocks, stones, roots and other impediments. Therefore, Bhutan is best visited by younger, fitter persons; people with mobility problems likely should not consider a visit.
Visiting Bhutan was an experience unlike any other, and we are honored and privileged to have explored this unique, unspoiled Himalayan country.
