THE GOTHAN GANG | Mother & 5 cubs

The sole purpose of visiting this park was to get a glimpse of this Tigress with 5 cubs.

Now, 5 cubs is not something which has been witnessed frequently, even at the growing rate of tiger population in the wild, in India.

I have been chasing Tigers for over 25 years now and could not afford to miss this chance.

Back to back 4 safaris went blank, which, to say the least was testing our patience. There was no sign of the tigress and her cubs and we kept praying.

On our last safari, 30 minutes before the safari ended our prayers were answered.

We are immensely grateful to Vinod M Mohankar for his excellent driving and guiding skills.

After a decade I used my Nikon 200-400 f4 lens, without this lens it would have been difficult to document this sighting. I have no words to praise the Z8. What a creation by Nikon. Amazing!!!

PAAR
A sighting that lit up an otherwise mundane safari. We had been waiting in search of a tiger for the entire afternoon safari. The inactivity had taken a sufficient toll on our energy as we were unsure how to proceed. After a long, stagnating wait, Mama, our naturalist, decided that we should take a round away from the other vehicles. Mama's intelligent move would prove to be decisive. Suddenly I saw the majestic tigress, approaching our gypsy from the left side. She had just got up from the water, the golden light illuminating her regal frame. Our excitement regenerated, I composed myself to take this shot just as the tigress peered at us from behind this boulder. Having taken this memorable frame, I watched in wonder as the tigress calmly walked across the path in front of us, eventually disappearing into the forest. In the jungle, much like in life, it is sporadic moments such as this that truly make the agonising waits fruitful. Mama's quick-thinking and a little help from Lady Luck ensured we left that day with beaming faces and filled memory cards!

DHELA
A zone form Corbett that I visited for the first time this summer, in all these years. Dhela was an unplanned visit, as I had a few days of holidays before my night stay bookings at Dhikala zone. Luckily we found a room at Dhela FRH for one night and decided to pick it up. What happened after that is history...
On our very first safari (afternoon) we were on the main road that runs through the heart of Dhela zone.. It is a very unimpressive & unassuming sight with field like open areas on both sides of the Tar road that runs from the middle. These open areas are actually grasslands, the grass of which has been recently burned down as a measure of controllled fire, so that new grass can emerge thus providing feed for the herbivores.
There are about two, three man made water bodies in this area, which are visible from a distance..
As we were waiting on the main road, not much was happening and we took short rounds on both sides just to escape the heat and boredom. It is when, I spotted something black coming out of the waterbody at a distance of about 500 Mts.. As we drove towards it, our guide said it was a sloth bear,, but I was not convinced and I asked Mama, to drive a little faster.. which he did and within seconds I saw that the Tiger had just come out of the water and was shaking the water off with a final confirmation of the twirl of his tail which formed up the much familiar pattern of water in the air above him. Thus confirming his presence.
We had very little time to position ourselves to get this shot, with the back light and an amazing experience of seeing a male tiger walking straight up.

PHATO
A part of Corbett, is a zone I visited for the first time.. As per the initial plan, me and Kian were supposed to stay at Ramnagar the day we reached ramnagar, but thanks to Mama (Md Islam), my dear friend and Naturalist Driver, for almost a decade now, got us booked at this FRH for a day. It was a fantastic experience to stay atop a treehouse, a first time experience for me and a memorable one. The staff at the FRH was fabulous, although the meals were quite expensive, considering the price and has plenty of room for improvement.
Anyway, I did not have much expectation from Phato as it it was planned for time-pass, but to my surprise, it turned out to be one of the best wildlife experiences of my life, especially looking at strike rate of percentage of wildlife sightings vs stay time & safaris.
We had just about one day at Phato and could manage one Afternoon & one Morning Safari only.. Well, this "only" probably almost sounded like the protocol of using Only next to a financial quote... well here's the story....
Thanks to the experience of Mama & his extraordinary instincts, On our very first safari he almost sniffed his way up to this beautiful young mother Tigress. Probably the Tigress was more startled than us when we crossed paths, as it is evident from her look in this image.
Hats off to Mama at the way he tracked down this tigress without any alarm calls or any leading Pugmarks. And there was no guide with us. He did that with ease and confidence, not once but twice with this tigress and several times during this trip that took us through multiple zones of Corbett and some happy sightings and slightly special images.
This image is my heartfelt thanksgiving to my dear old Friend & naturalist driver at Corbett...Md Islam lovingly popular as MAMA.
