A historic day as the opening of Shipki La to the general public coincided perfectly with our run from Sangla to Kaza on Day 5 of our Spiti Expedition 🏔️
Though the detour would take up a good 4-5 hours, we considered the opportunity too good to miss, and made our way to what used to be the old trade border with China on this axis! 🏍️
Always a great experience to interact with the troops that keep our borders safe and secure - without whom we would never have such free and safe access to the most remote regions in our land! 🫡🇮🇳
Arrival in Kaza only around dusk - but well worth every hour spent on the road on what was a beautiful day in the mountains 😎

Adv-Moto training is par for the course on all .shimla expeditions, to make sure riders are prepared to face the technical bits ahead! 🏍️
Our team did a quick session in Sangla to iron out some of the challenges faced by the riders before we hit the tricky stuff in and around Kaza, and beyond, in the days to come on this year’s edition of Spiti - The Middle Land 🏔️
All while the machines received some much needed TLC after the first few days of riding through the mountains! 🔧

A brilliant first day of our Spiti Expedition as we made our way clear of the milling throngs of tourist traffic and into the real Himachal - green forests and plenty of twisty tarmac - all sure to keep the group in good stead for the days to come! ⛰️🌲
The day ended in the brilliant evening light of the mountains 🌅

Muscle memory was beginning to kick in, and plenty of technical sections were covered that the riders wouldn’t have even dreamed of in the days prior! 🐪

Started in 1999 as a salve to 3 motorsport junkies whose desire to wander aimlessly, albeit at ridiculously high speeds across the Himalayan landscape, led them to fire up an idea that gave birth to the now quite famous Rallye Raid de Himalaya - a cross country rally that runs 2000 kms across the Western Himalaya just as winter is tightening its death grip on the mountains.
This annual pilgrimage of masochists, armed to the teeth with outdated equipment and dubious 4x4’s will attempt to beat icy roads, frozen riverbeds and the highest mountain passes in the world in an attempt to win the ‘World’s Highest Rally’ !
The more mentally unsettled amongst this band of merry men and women will go that extra mile and take up cudgels with the mountains on motorcycles ! Only 20% will survive the ordeal - the others dropping like flies - their machines afflicted with metal fatigue and the humans subject to the tortures meted out by unrelenting cold (minus 22 celsius), oxygen starvation ( 30 percent as compared to sea level) and the joys of sleep deprivation which combine to make a deadly, energy sapping cocktail.
Enrol for the 20th anniversary edition that will definitely keep you awake for the next 4 months preparing for it and will, in 6 short, swift days, decide whether you were man enough for the job. Women need not feel left out - many beat most of the men to be at the finish line. Others join the line of crying men pleading for a restart.
