Have you ever seen this beautiful object? It’s about the Sicilian carretto, which was once a means of transport and then gradually became a work of art. Now it’s becoming part of the Unesco world heritage. The origins of this historical cart date back to the early 1800. The donkey-drawn carretto was used to transport goods of various kinds and was created by many artisans such as woodcarvers, metal workers, and painters. The wheels and the sideboards of the cart were decorated with typical scenes from Sicilian history and folklore and colourful geometrical designs. It wasn’t only a mean of transport but also a true piece of art . Now the Regional Department of Cultural Heritage and Sicilian Identity is promoting and supporting the regional event “Carretto - Icona dell’identità siciliana” (Cart – Icon of Sicilian identity), an annual event to promote and disseminate the culture and traditions related to the Sicilian cart, one of the region’s symbols.
