The 30th edition of the Giostra Cavalleresca di Sulmona was won by the Sestiere di Porta Filiamabili with their knight Stefano Venturelli. However, as our vacation rental, The Poets' Retreat is located in the Bonomini Sestiere we like to cheer them on each year!

This is the Monumental Fountain of Neptune and Amphitrite located in Pettorano sul Gizio, Italy.

It was inaugurated at the end of the 19th century and is located along the facade of a local church.

The fountain features bronze statues of the Greek deities Neptune (Poseidon) and his wife Amphitrite.

Water flows from a rock formation situated between the two deities and from two small lion-shaped masks. The monumental fountain is built directly onto the lateral wall of the Chiesa della Beata Maria Vergine e San Dionisio

The perfect spot for dinner last night; Il Torchio, Pettorano Sul Gizio. Excellent food, great atmosphere, and fantastic views. 👌

An unexpected treasure along the roadside in San Benedetto in Perillis. Pure white Lilium Candidum (the Madonna Lily) standing tall and elegant against the landscape. Accompanied by the sweet, melodic trill of the Eurasian Blackcap drifting through the crisp Abruzzo air. Pure magic. 🪶🌿✨

Wandering through the timeless, winding alleys of Sulmona without a plan you experience its true magic. From sun dappled, labyrinthine passages that open into bustling, sunlit corsos, there is an authentic charm to the laundry drying above you in the crisp mountain air. At the edges of the historic centre, where the streets end the majestic mountains appear on the horizon watching over the city.

The ubiquitous shot of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà taken from the fortress at Rocca Calascio (1,460m - 1,512m asl) in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park

Situated just below the highest fortress in Italy and the highest in the Apennines, at the end of the main path leading up to it, this octagonal church was built in the late 16th to 17th century.

Not usually open to the public, should you visit on a weekend, you may be lucky to get a peak inside.

(The fortress itself was founded in the 10th century as a single watchtower, with the main fortress and surrounding walls added in the 13th and 15th centuries. It was a strategic military observation point, designed to communicate with other towers and castles via torches or mirrors.)
