The ubiquitous shot of the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà taken from the fortress at Rocca Calascio (1,460m - 1,512m asl) in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park

Situated just below the highest fortress in Italy and the highest in the Apennines, at the end of the main path leading up to it, this octagonal church was built in the late 16th to 17th century.

Not usually open to the public, should you visit on a weekend, you may be lucky to get a peak inside.

(The fortress itself was founded in the 10th century as a single watchtower, with the main fortress and surrounding walls added in the 13th and 15th centuries. It was a strategic military observation point, designed to communicate with other towers and castles via torches or mirrors.)

Built in 1288 by Pietro da Morrone, a hermit who became Pope Celestine V, Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio is where he was also crowned in 1294.

The basilica is the site of the original Papal Jubilee, the 'Bull of Forgiveness', granted 6 years before the first formal Roman Jubilee in 1300.
Its iconic, "jewel-box" checkerboard façade is made of pink and white stone from Genzano di Sassa.

The Holy Door on the left side is opened once a year for the Forgiveness Walk.

The interior is known for being massive, serene, and austere, with medieval frescoes and a stunning floor, extensively restored after the 2009 earthquake.

Situated in an isolated, green area in the southwest of the city, surrounded by a serene, large lawn, the basilica is a key, top-rated destination and a major symbol of L'Aquila the capital city of culture of Italy in 2026.

A visit to the oldest abbey in Abruzzo; Abbazia di San Benedetto in San Benedetto in Perillis

The monastery of St. Benedict was founded in 1073 by Trasmondo, Bishop of Valva. This monastery was famous and powerful in the Middle Ages because, in addition to its illustrious role in religious, spiritual, and artistic life, it owned extensive lands, as well as the surrounding town. It subsequently became a fiefdom of the Celestine Fathers of L'Aquila. Cultural Heritage carried out significant restoration work in the church adjacent to the convent, the latter is currently undergoing extensive renovation works. This work, eliminating the previous Baroque additions, brought to light the typical early medieval structures. Now, visitors can admire a church that is among the oldest in Abruzzo, with a Lombard cross carved above the portal.
