🇮🇹 COSA È IL MANHATTANHENGE? E PERCHÉ QUESTO NOME?

il Manhattanenge, conosciuto anche come Solstizio di Manhattan, è un fenomeno che si verifica due volte l’anno, quando il disco solare si allinea perfettamente con le streets, attraversandole da una parte all’altra. Solitamente, avviene a fine maggio, e tra il 10 ed il 15 di luglio. Il termine fu coniato da un astrofisico del Museo di Storia Naturale, che si ispirò al tempio di Stonehenge, in Inghilterra, dove, durante il solstizio d’Estate, il sole si alinea con la “pietra del tallone”, collocata nel suo punto di accesso. APPUNTAMENTO IL 28 e 29 MAGGIO!

Come vi avevo preannunciato, dopo 7 anni, i lavori sono quasi ultimati, e, per la prima volta nella sua storia, il Flatiron Building è illuminato!

il negozio di abbigliamento presente al numero 247 di Mulberry Street, nel quartiere di Nolita, probabilmente oggi non dice nulla; un tempo, qui si trovava il Ravenite Social Club, quartier generale della famiglia mafiosa dei Gambino. Era molto frequente trovarvi John Gotti, che spesso si prestava a fare fotografie con i turisti. È stato grazie anche alle intercettazioni ambientali effettuate in questo luogo, che si è potuti procedere all’arresto del padrino

il One World Trade Center è il grattacielo più alto dell’Emisfero Occidentale. La sua altezza, pari a 1,776 piedi, ovvero 541 metri, non è casuale. È stato, infatti, scelto questo numero, come tributo all’anno della Dichiarazione di Indipendenza; per l’appunto, il 1776. Inoltre, la dimensione della sua base corrisponde perfettamente a quella che era la base delle Torri Gemelle. 🇮🇹 I QUARTIERI DELLA CITTÀ - CHELSEA

il quartiere di Chelsea è tra i più grandi di Manhattan; si estende, infatti, tra la W14th e la W30th streets, e tra il fiume Hudson e la Sixth Avenue. Il proprietario dei terreni era il colonnello Thomas Clarke, che chiamó i suoi possedimenti col nome di Chelsea, replicando il nome della omonima località britannica, in onore di un ospedale militare inglese. A lui succedette il nipote, l’architetto Clement Clarke Moore, che fece sviluppare l’area, donandone i terreni, successivamente, al General Theological Seminary, con la clausola che il quartiere venisse sviluppato dal punto di vista residenziale e commerciale. Chelsea si sviluppò su due tronconi: il lato occidentale, a ridosso del fiume Hudson, e adombrato dalle tratte della ferrovia sopraelevata, divenne un importante centro industriale, con numerosi magazzini, e molti immigrati che ci lavoravano. La zona orientale ebbe uno sviluppo molto più artistico, con la W23rd Street che divenne un importante Theater District, e numerose gallerie d’arte che iniziarono ad aprire. Oggi, è uno dei quartieri più trendy, con numerosissimi clubs e locali di vario genere

🇺🇸 THE CITY NEIGHBORHOODS- CHELSEA

the Chelsea neighborhood is among the largest in Manhattan; it extends, in fact, between W14th and W30th streets, and between the Hudson River and Sixth Avenue. The owner of the land was Colonel Thomas Clarke, who called his possessions with the name of Chelsea, in honor of an English military hospital. He was succeeded by his nephew, architect Clement Clarke Moore, who had the area developed, later donating the land to the General Theological Seminary, with the proviso that the neighborhood would be developed from a residential and commercial point of view. Chelsea developed on two sections: the western side, close to the Hudson River, and overshadowed by the elevated railway sections, became an important industrial center, with numerous warehouses, and many immigrants who worked there. The eastern area had a much more artistic development, with W23rd Street becoming an important Theater district, and numerous art galleries starting to open. Today, it is one of the trendiest neighborhoods, with many clubs and clubs of various kinds

🇮🇹 LA “CATTEDRALE DEL COMMERCIO”.. PERCHÉ QUESTO SOPRANNOME?

Il Woolworth Building è uno degli edifici più belli ed antichi di NYC. Si trova al numero 233 della Broadway, nei pressi del Civic Center. Quando fu inaugurato, nel 1913, era il palazzo più alto della città, superato nel 1930 dal Chrysler Building. La storia del suo proprietario è l’incarnazione del raggiungimento del sogno americano: Frank Woolworth inizió dal basso, facendo l’impiegato in una bottega. Ebbe l’intuizione di aprire un negozio all’interno del quale la gente potesse scegliere la merce senza stare a trattare sul prezzo. Nel 1879, così, aprì il primo five-ten cent store, dove tutto si vendeva a prezzo fisso. In breve divenne una catena, e, nel 1913, poté pagare 13 milioni e 500 mila dollari in contanti per la realizzazione di questo edificio. L’opera fu affidata a Cass Gilbert, e, per la quantità e minuzia di particolari, ed anche per il significato simbolico della carriera di Woolworth, l’edificio è stato soprannominato “la Cattedrale del Commercio”. Al livello del primo piano, ci sono delle sculture di lavoratori impegnati a guadagnare denaro, mentre al livello del secondo piano 4 maschere che rappresentano i 4 continenti attivi commercialmente. C’è anche una scultura che ritrae lo stesso Woolworth che osserva un nichelino. L’edificio è stato di proprietà della Woolworth Company fino al 1998; oggi è un condominio di lusso

🇺🇸 THE CATHEDRAL OF COMMERCE..WHY THIS NICKCNAME?

The Woolworth Building is one of the most beautiful and oldest buildings in NYC. It is located at 233 Broadway, near the Civic Center. When it opened in 1913, it was the tallest building in the city, surpassed in 1930 by the Chrysler Building. The story of its owner is the embodiment of the achievement of the American dream: Frank Woolworth started from the bottom up, working as a clerk in a shop. He had the intuition to open a shop where people could choose the goods without negotiating on the price. Thus in 1879 he opened the first five-ten cent store, where everything was sold at a fixed price. It soon became a chain, and, in 1913, it was able to pay 13.5 million dollars in cash for the construction of this building. The work was entrusted to Cass Gilbert, and, due to the quantity and minuteness of details, and also for the symbolic significance of Woolworth's career, the building was nicknamed "the cathedral of commerce". On the first floor level, there are sculptures of workers engaged in earning money, while on the second floor level 4 masks representing the 4 commercially active continents. tra i grattacieli più riconoscibili nello skyline della Lower Manhattan, c’è il 40 Wall Street, oggi conosciuto come Trump Building, poiché è stato acquistato dal presidente americano. Caratterizzato dalla sua cupola piramidale di colore verde, un tempo ospitava la Banca di Manhattan. È stato progettato da due architetti, Matsui e Severance, il secondo dei quali era ex socio di William Van Alen, che, contemporaneamente, aveva progettato il Chrysler Building. Nacque una competizione tra i due, su chi avrebbe dovuto realizzare il grattacielo più alto; alla fine, grazie all’aggiunta del pennone all’ultimo istante, la spuntó il Chrysler Building. Il titolo di edificio più alto della città, peró, duró solo un anno, in quanto l’anno seguente, nel 1931, fu inaugurato l’Empire State Building

🇺🇸 40 WALL STREET AND THE CHALLENGE AGAINST THE CHRYSLER BUILDING

among the most recognizable skyscrapers in the Lower Manhattan skyline is 40 Wall Street, now known as the Trump Building, as it was bought by the US president. Characterized by its green pyramidal dome, it once housed the bank of Manhattan. It was designed by two architects, Matsui and Severance, the latter of whom was a former partner of William Van Alen, who simultaneously designed the Chrysler Building. A competition was born between the two, as to who should have built the tallest skyscraper; in the end, thanks to the addition of the flagpole at the last moment, the Chrysler Building won. The title of the tallest building in the city, however, lasted only a year, as the following year, 1931, the Empire State Building was inaugurated
