🇮🇹 10 EDIFICI DALL’ARCHITETTURA FUTURISTICA

oggi vi passo in rassegna alcuni grattacieli dall’architettura particolarmente avanguardista, sempre catalogati nell’ordine nei quali li vedete in foto

01- Via 57 West, progettato dallo studio danese BIG, situato tra la Twelfth Avenue e la West 57 street

02- 30 Hudson Yards, ormai celebre grazie al suo osservatorio The Edge

03- American Copper Buildings, particolarissimi nel loro corridoio di giunzione, che contiene una piscina e palestra

04- 8 Spruce Street, grattacielo del californiano Frank Gehry, con le sue tipiche linee, che danno una sensazione di movimento

05- 1 S 1st, così chiamato perché si trova al numero 1 della First South Street del quartiere di Williamsburg, a Brooklyn

06- 56 Leonard Street, ribattezzata Jenga Tower, poiché ricorda l’omonimo gioco da tavolo, situata nel quartiere di Tribeca

07- One High Line, nuovo complesso realizzato a ridosso del celebre parco sopraelevato

08- 520 west 28th street, edificio residenziale realizzato dalla irachena Zaha Hadid, nel quale vivono diversi personaggi dello spettacolo

09- 100 Eleventh Avenue, realizzato da Jean Nouvel, che dà il meglio di sé quando è illuminato, nelle ore serali

10- 53 west 53, realizzato sempre da Jean Nouvel, che sorge proprio sopra il MOMA

today I'm going to show you some skyscrapers with particularly avant-garde architecture, cataloged in the order in which you see them in the photo

01- Via 57 West, designed by the Danish studio BIG, located between Twelfth Avenue and West 57 street

02- 30 Hudson Yards, famous due to its observatory The Edge

03- American Copper Buildings, very particular in their junction corridor, which contains a swimming pool and gym

04- 8 Spruce Street, skyscraper by Californian Frank Gehry, with its typical lines, which give a sensation of movement

05- 1 S 1st, so called because it is located at 1 First South Street in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn

06- 56 Leonard Street, renamed Jenga Tower, cause resembles the board game of the same name, located in the Tribeca neighborhood

07- One High Line, new complex built close to the famous elevated park

08- 520 west 28th street, residential building built by the Iraqi Zaha Hadid, in which several showbiz personalities live

09- 100 Eleventh Avenue, created by Jean Nouvel, which is at its best when illuminated in the evening hours

10- 53 west 53, also built by Jean Nouvel, which stands right above the MOMA

🇮🇹 DOPO IL FLATIRON, TOCCA A LUI

Ebbene si: è il turno del meraviglioso Chrysler Building. Qualche giorno fa, il 07 Ottobre, Tishman Speyer e la Cooper Foundation hanno presentato un progetto da 235 milioni di dollari per la sua ristrutturazione. Verranno ristrutturate la facciata e la celebre cupola, modernizzati gli ascensori, e, cosa interessante, realizzata una lounge room, con accesso all’esterno, al 61esimo piano, proprio all’altezza delle celebri sculture delle aquile. Che vogliano realizzarci un osservatorio?

🇺🇸 AFTER THE FLATIRON, IT’S ITS TURN

It is the turn of the magnificent Chrysler Building. A few days ago, on October 7th, Tishman Speyer and the Cooper Foundation unveiled a $235 million renovation project. Plans include refurbishing the façade and the iconic crown, modernizing the elevators, and—interestingly—creating a lounge with outdoor access on the 61st floor, right at the level of the famous eagle sculptures. Could they be planning to build an observation deck there?

🇮🇹 IL WALDORF ASTORIA DI HARLEM

le Theresa Towers sono state per diversi anni l’edificio più alto del quartiere di Harlem. Qui, un tempo, sorgeva l’Hotel Theresa, così chiamato poiché l’architetto che lo progettó si sposò per due volte, con due donne che si chiamavano entrambe Theresa. Inizialmente era riservato alla clientela bianca, ma fu proprio quando aprì a tutti che divenne celebre, prendendo il soprannome di “Waldorf Astoria di Harlem”. Vi alloggiavano molto spesso i musicisti che si esibivano nel vicino Apollo Theater; l’ospite più illustre fu, però, Fidel Castro, recatosi in città per una visita alle Nazioni Unite. Circolano numerose storie circa le motivazioni che lo spinsero a soggiornare qui, in quanto originariamente era previsto che soggiornasse allo Shelburne, nel Midtown. C’è una teoria che afferma che fu infastidito da una richiesta di anticipo economico da parte della reception dell’hotel; un’altra secondo la quale fu allontanato perché il suo entourage gettava mozziconi sulla moquette, e perché avevano introdotto dei polli vivi in albergo, disturbando la clientela. Probabilmente, queste sono solo storie, e Fidel Castro scelse di soggiornare ad Harlem semplicemente perché riteneva la popolazione di questo quartiere più vicina alle proprie ideologie. Le Theresa Towers furono anche la sede della organizzazione dell’unità afro-americana di Malcolm X, fondata nel 1964. Oggi ospita uffici ed spazi commerciali

🇺🇸 HARLEM WALDORF ASTORIA

the Theresa Towers were for several years the tallest building in Harlem. Here once stood the Hotel Theresa, so called because the architect who designed it married twice, with two women who both called each other. Initially it was reserved for white customers, but it was when it opened to all that it became famous, taking the nickname of "Waldorf Astoria of Harlem". The musicians who performed in the nearby Apollo Theater often stayed there; the most illustrious guest, however, was Fidel Castro, who went to the city for a visit to the United Nations. There are numerous stories circulating about his motivation for staying here, as he was originally planned to stay at Shelburne, in Midtown. There is a theory that states that he was annoyed by a request for an advance payment from the hotel reception; another according to which he was dismissed because his entourage threw cigarette butts on the carpet, and because they had brought live chickens into the hotel, disturbing the customers. Probably, these are just stories, and Fidel Castro chose to stay in Harlem simply because he felt the population of this neighborhood closer to their own ideologies. The Theresa Towers was also home to Malcolm X's organization of African-American unity, founded in 1964. Today hosts offices and commercial spaces

🇮🇹 LA COSTIERA AMALFITANA DEL BRONX

nel ricchissimo quartiere di Riverdale, situato nel Distretto del Bronx, sulla Palisade Avenue esistono alcuni edifici che riportano alla mente la meravigliosa Italia; paesaggi che, in molti, non immaginano possano esistere a NYC. Vi mostro, in particolare, la Villa Charlotte Bronte, composta da 17 unità abitative, e, dal lato opposto, la Villa Victoria. Entrambe risalgono al 1927. Vi consiglio, comunque, un giro su questa Avenue, che è piena di ville storiche. I civici di queste due ville sono il 2501 ed

🇺🇸 THE AMALFI COAST OF THE BRONX

In the rich Riverdale neighborhood of the Bronx Borough, along Palisade Avenue, there are buildings that evoke the beauty of Italy—scenery that many wouldn't imagine exists in NYC. I’d like to show you Villa Charlotte Brontë, which comprises 17 residential units, and—directly across the street—Villa Victoria. Both date back to 1927. I highly recommend taking a stroll along this avenue, as it is lined with historic villas. The street numbers for these two villas are 2501 and

queste tre statue equestri presenti sulla
Central Park South, tra la Fifth e la Sixth Ave, raffigurano tre condottieri che hanno combattuto per liberare il Sud America dalla dominazione sp****la; quella in alto rappresenta Simon Bolivar, forse il personaggio storico più importante dei tre; in basso a sinistra, Jose Julian Marti, che guidó la rivolta cubana mentre era in esilio a New York. Tornato in patria, fu assassinato, e ciò diede inizio alla guerra civile. In basso a destra Jose de San Martin, che contribuì alla liberazione di Messico ed Argentina. Il piazzale che comprende le tre statue è stato ribattezzato, anche ufficialmente, come Bolivar Plaza

Returning to his homeland, he was murdered, and this episode started the civil war. Bottom right Jose de San Martin, who contributed to the liberation of Mexico and Argentina. The square that includes the three statues has been renamed Bolivar Plaza

MANHATTAN
Coincide con la New York County, ed il nome deriva dal linguaggio dei Lenape, la tribù di nativi che abitava queste terre. Nonostante in molti sostengano che significhi “la terra con molte colline”, la parola “Manahahttaan”, nel loro gergo, significava “il luogo nel quale raccogliamo il legno per fabbricare gli archi”. È, difatti, composta da “manah”, che significa “raccogliere”, “aht”, che significa “arco”, e “aan”, che era un elemento utilizzato per coniugare i verbi

BROOKLYN
Coincide con la Kings County; il Distretto, successivamente, si è sviluppato intorno il villaggio principale, che, in epoca olandese, si chiamava Breuckelen, in inglese Broken Land, ovvero Terra Irregolare. Questo nome, a sua volta, fu dato perché questo villaggio somigliava ad un altro, omonimo, situato vicino Amsterdam

QUEENS
Coincide con la Queens County; quando i britannici unificarono alcune città indipendenti, come Newtown, Jamaica e Flushing, chiamarono così la Contea, in onore di Caterina di Braganza, moglie di Carlo II. Questo, anche perché la maggior parte degli abitanti era composta da lealisti, quindi fedeli alla corona britannica. Il nome, poi, è rimasto invariato

Coincide con la Bronx County, il cui nome deriva da Jonas Bronck, mercante svedese che capeggiava la prima colonia che popoló queste terre, nel 1641. Egli acquistó dei terreni a ridosso di un corso d’acqua, che fu ribattezzato Bronck’s River

STATEN ISLAND
Coincide con la Richmond County; Henry Hudson, navigatore che perlustró le acque di Manhattan nel 1609, facendo da apripista alla colonizzazione olandese, fece fermata a Staten Island, e la nominó come Staaten Eylandt, dagli Stati Generali, che erano il corpo di governo olandese dell’epoca. Durante il periodo britannico, l’isola fu ribattezzata Richmond County, in onore del Duca di Richmond

MANHATTAN

Henry Hudson, the navigator who patrolled the waters of Manhattan in 1609, anticipating the Dutch colonization, stopped at Staten Island, and named it as Staaten Eylandt, after the States General, which were the Dutch governing body of the time. During the British period, the island was renamed Richmond County, in honor of the Duke of Richmond
