🇮🇹 IL GEMELLO DELL’EMPIRE STATE BUILDING

questo grattacielo in stile Art Deco, molto simile all’Empire State Building, è il 500 Fifth Avenue. Non si tratta di un caso. In effetti, è stato progettato dagli stessi architetti: Shreve, Lamb e Harmon. Inoltre, è stato inaugurato nello stesso anno: il 1931. Si trova all’angolo tra la Fifth Avenue e la 42nd st, che, all’epoca, era considerato l’incrocio più importante della città, dopo quello tra la Broadway e Wall Street. Il rilievo sopra l’ingresso prende il nome di “Genius of Modern Skyscrapers”

DI CHI È LA VOCE CHE ASCOLTATE NEI VAGONI DELLA METRO

chi è stato a NYC, avrà molto probabilmente usufruito della metropolitana. In maniera molto ripetitiva, ad ogni fermata, avrete ascoltato la frase “Stand clear of the closing doors”. Ebbene, la voce appartiene ad un giornalista e speaker di Bloomberg Radio, piuttosto famoso negli States, di nome Charlie Pellett. Tra l’altro, registrò questo annuncio, nel 1999, come volontario, senza quindi percepire alcun compenso

WHOSE VOICE DO YOU HEAR ON THE SUBWAY TRAINS?

Anyone who has visited NYC has almost certainly ridden the subway. At every stop, you would have repeatedly heard the phrase "Stand clear of the closing doors." Well, that voice belongs to Charlie Pellett, a Bloomberg Radio journalist and broadcaster who is quite famous in the States. Moreover, he recorded this announcement as a volunteer back in 1999, receiving no payment for it.

🇮🇹 NON SOLO SAN GENNARO..OGGI AL VIA LA FESTA DI SANTA ROSALIA

È meno conosciuta della Festa di San Gennaro, ma molto più autentica. Oggi, 20 agosto, inizia la 52esima edizione della Festa di Santa Rosalia, Santa protettrice della città di Palermo. Si tiene nel Distretto di Brooklyn, quartiere di Bensonhurst, sulla 18th Avenue, tra la 68th e la 75th street. Difatti, è conosciuta anche come la festa della 18th Avenue. Durerà fino al 30 Agosto, con la presenza di giostre, parate, stand gastronomici, musica live ed altre forme di intrattenimento. L’ultimo giorno, alle 14, si tiene la processione, con messa finale alle 15, nella chiesa della Nostra Signora di Guadalupe

🇺🇸 NOT JUST SAN GENNARO... THE ST ROSALIA FEAST STARTS TODAY

It is less famous than the San Gennaro Feast, but far more authentic. Today, August 20th, marks the start of the 52nd edition of the St Rosalia Feast, honoring the patron saint of Palermo. It takes place in Brooklyn, in the Bensonhurst neighborhood along 18th Avenue, between 68th and 75th Streets—and is often referred to simply as the "18th Avenue Feast." The event runs until August 30th, featuring carnival rides, parades, food stalls, live music, and other forms of entertainment. On the final day, a procession takes place at 2:00 PM, followed by a closing mass at 3:00 PM at the Church of Our Lady of Guadalupe.

🇮🇹 L’HOTEL DI GOSSIP GIRL

Famoso per le sue apparizioni televisive, tra gli alberghi più lussuosi della città, il Lotte New York Palace Hotel sorge al numero 455 della Madison Avenue, proprio alle spalle della St Patrick Cathedral. L’edificio un tempo prendeva il nome di Villard Houses: furono commissionate da un industriale bavarese di nome Henry Villard, ed uno dei primi lavori in città degli architetti McKim, Mead e White. Ricavate nello spiazzo dedito all’inversione di marcia delle carrozze, ed ispirate al Palazzo della Cancelleria di Roma, rimasero a lungo incomplete, poiché Villard vide dilapidarsi in breve tempo il suo patrimonio, e non poté portare a compimento il progetto. Dopo alcuni anni di utilizzo da parte del Vescovado, sono state completate da alcuni allievi dei 3 architetti, ed oggi ospitano uno degli alberghi più rinomati della città

🇺🇸 THE GOSSIP GIRL HOTEL

one of the most luxurious hotels in the city, the Lotte Palace Hotel is located at 455 Madison Avenue, just behind St Patrick Cathedral. The building once took the name of Villard Houses: they were commissioned by a Bavarian industrialist named Henry Villard, and one of the first works in the city by McKim, Mead and White. Obtained in the open space dedicated to the reversal of the carriages, and inspired by the Palazzo della Cancelleria in Rome, they remained incomplete for a long time, as Villard saw his assets squandered in a short time, and was unable to complete the project. After a few years of use by the Bishopric, they were completed by some students of the 3 architects, and today they house one of the most renowned hotels in the city

🇮🇹 LA BETHESDA FOUNTAIN CHIUDE PER CIRCA UN ANNO

probabilmente il posto più conosciuto di Central Park, dove sono state girate tantissime scene cinematografiche e televisive, la Bethesda Fountain è stata spenta e transennata. Sono previsti, infatti, lavori di ristrutturazione, sia per quanto riguarda l’aspetto esteriore, con il ripristino di varie ornamentazioni danneggiate, sia quello tecnico, con il miglioramento del sistema di pompaggio e filtraggio dell’acqua, oltre all’aggiunta di nuovi disegni di getti d’acqua, e di un sistema di illuminazione. I lavori interessano anche il vicino lago chiamato Model Boat Pond, mentre rimarrà regolarmente aperta la Bethesda Terrace

🇺🇸 BETHESDA FOUNTAIN CLOSES FOR ABOUT A YEAR

Bethesda Fountain—arguably Central Park’s most famous landmark and the setting for countless film and television scenes—has been turned and cordoned off. Renovation work is planned to address both its appearance, through the restoration of various damaged ornamental features, and its technical systems, including upgrades to the water pumping and filtration mechanisms, the addition of new water jet patterns, and a new lighting system. The project also covers the nearby Model Boat Pond, while Bethesda Terrace will remain open as usual.

🇮🇹 UN ANGOLO DI PARADISO ALL’INTERNO DI MANHATTAN

a ridosso dell’ East River, tra la E49th e la E53rd, si trova la bellissima ed antica zona residenziale di Beekman Place. Risale ai tempi degli olandesi, e, difatti, il nome deriva da una delle più potenti famiglie del periodo, che viveva in una magione, oggi demolita, chiamata Mount Pleasant, all’altezza della E50th. Nella zona vi abitavano numerose personalità importanti, attratte dalla sua tranquillità, e dalla possibilità di disporre di moli privati per l’attracco degli yacht. Dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, ha perso un po’ del suo fascino, perché la realizzazione della FDR Drive ne ha minato il silenzio e la tranquillità, ed ha posto una barriera tra le abitazioni e le acque dell’ East River

🇺🇸 A SLICE OF PARADISE INSIDE MANHATTAN

close to the East River, between the E49th and E53rd, you can find the beautiful and ancient residential area of Beekman Place. It dates back to the times of the Dutch, and, in fact, the name derives from one of the most powerful families of the period, who lived in a mansion, now demolished, called Mount Pleasant, at the E50th. Numerous important personalities lived in the area, attracted by its tranquility, and by the possibility of having private piers for mooring yachts. After the Second World War, it lost some of its charm, because the construction of the FDR Drive undermined its silence and tranquility, and placed a barrier between the houses and the waters of the East River

situato sulla W42nd Street, a ridosso della Seventh Avenue, il New Amsterdam Theatre ha un’importanza storica particolarmente rilevante: è, infatti, insieme al Lyceum, il teatro più antico del Theater District e, come se non bastasse, il primo esempio di Art Nouveau della città. Quando venne inaugurato, nel 1903, fu soprannominato “The House Beautiful”; cavalcó gli anni d’oro del distretto finché, durante il periodo di crisi della città, negli anni ‘70 e ‘80, fu relegato a cinema di B movies. Chiuse i battenti nel 1985; acquistato dalla Walt Disney Company nel 1993, quattro anni dopo è stato completamente restaurato, ed oggi offre esclusivamente spettacoli di questa casa di produzione

🇺🇸 THE OLDEST THEATER IN THEATER DISTRICT

located on W42nd Street, close to Seventh Avenue, the New Amsterdam Theater has a particularly significant historical importance: it is, in fact, together with the Lyceum, the oldest theater in the Theater District and, as if that weren't enough, the first example of Art Nouveau of the city. When it was inaugurated in 1903, it was nicknamed “The house beautiful”; he rode the district's golden years until, during the financial crisis of the city, in ‘70s and ‘80s, it was relegated to B movies. It closed its doors in 1985; purchased by the Walt Disney Company in 1993, four years later it was completely restored, and today offers exclusively performances by this production company
