Did you know the canals of Venice are teeming with marine life? 🐟🌊

When the boat traffic slows down and the tide brings in fresh Adriatic water, you’ll often spot schools of cefali (grey mullet) gliding right along the canal walls and marble steps.

The Venetian lagoon is a living, breathing tidal ecosystem—not just a scenic backdrop!

Have you ever spotted fish or marine life while crossing a bridge in Venice? ✨

Golden hour along the Zattere hits differently. 🌅✨

Wide promenades, a gentle breeze coming off the Giudecca Canal, and watching the sunset paint the lagoon in shades of amber and rose. Whether you’re grabbing a gianduiotto from Gelateria da Nico or enjoying an unhurried evening stroll, this is where Venice slows down.

One question we often get from our guests is: "Can a taxi drop us off directly at our front door?" 🚖🚤

We hear this all the time, so we decided to put together a quick guide to help our guests and first-time visitors navigate lagoon arrivals smoothly! Here is how transport in Venice actually works:

🛑 1. Wheeled Taxis Stop at Piazzale Roma

Venice is entirely pedestrian and waterborne. All cars, airport shuttles, and wheeled taxis terminate at Piazzale Roma (or Tronchetto parking). No vehicles with wheels can go past this point.

🚆 2. Arriving by Train?

Venezia Santa Lucia puts you right on the Grand Canal, where you step directly out to the Ferrovia water bus (vaporetto) docks and private water taxi stands.

🚤 3. Water Taxis & Doorstep Access

Private water taxis navigate the canals, but can only drop you directly at your accommodation if the building has its own private dock or water gate (porta d'acqua). Otherwise, they pull up to the nearest accessible public canal landing.

🚶 4. The "Calli" Reality Check

Venice is a labyrinth of historic, narrow alleyways (calli) and bridges tucked away from open water. The final stretch to almost every stay is a walk on foot!

💡 Our Top Arrival Tip: Travel with lightweight luggage you can easily carry over footbridges, and wear comfortable walking shoes on travel days!

📌 Save this post for your upcoming Venice trip, and share it with someone visiting soon!

Ever wonder where iconic Venetian gondolas are born and maintained?

Tucked away along the Rio di San Trovaso is the Squero di San Trovaso, one of the oldest operational gondola boatyards in the city (dating back to the 17th century!). Look closely at the building—it was built out of alpine timber and resembles a mountain chalet, because the original boatbuilders migrated from the Dolomite mountains centuries ago bringing their timber craft to the lagoon.

In a city with zero cars, zero roads, and hundreds of bridges, every single vehicle here floats—from garbage collection to emergency services and taxis.

💡 Planning a trip to Venice soon?

Wondering what actually happens after you arrive at Piazzale Roma or Santa Lucia, and how to get your luggage to your door without getting lost?

📲 Stay tuned this weekend! We’re sharing an essential guide on how Venetian transport really works, what to expect with water taxis and vaporettos, and how to navigate the city smoothly.

Buon Ferragosto from Venice!

If you saw our last video about the empty tables and closed shops—today is the reason why! August 15th marks Ferragosto, Italy’s biggest national summer holiday.

A 2,000-Year Tradition:

Ferragosto dates back to 18 BC with Roman Emperor Augustus (Feriae Augusti), created as a festive break to celebrate the harvest and give workers a well-deserved rest.

How Venice celebrates today:

Boat picnics drifting across the lagoon

Sun-drenched beach days at the Lido

Epic, multi-course feasts with family and friends 🥂

💡 Visiting right now? Make dinner reservations early, head to the water to catch the breeze, and soak in the holiday atmosphere!

Have you ever spent Ferragosto in Italy? Let us know in the comments! 👇

Spotting empty outdoor tables and closed doors around Venice this week?

Don't worry, you haven't stumbled into a ghost town! You’re just experiencing one of Italy’s favorite summer traditions: Chiuso per ferie (Closed for Holidays).

Mid-August marks Ferragosto, when local families, artisan shops, and neighborhood trattorias close up shop to head to the beaches or mountains for a well-deserved break.

💡 Traveler Tip: While main attractions stay open, make sure to plan ahead, check hours, and book reservations early if you're visiting this week!

Stay tuned- this Saturday, August 15th, we are dropping our breakdown of Ferragosto and how to navigate the holiday in the lagoon!

Did you know the iconic flag of Venice has 6 distinct fringe tails? 🦁🚩

Known as the Standard of Saint Mark, those six split tails represent the six historical sestieri (neighborhoods) of Venice: Cannaregio, Castello, San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce, and Dorsoduro. Historically, the split design allowed the fringes to flutter independently in the sea breeze without tearing the main canvas!

☀️ Heatwave Alert for Travelers:
Summer in the lagoon is in full swing right now! If you’re exploring the city today, make sure to stay hydrated, carry a refillable water bottle (you’ll find public fountain taps, or fontanelle, all over the Campo squares!), seek out shade during mid-day, and take plenty of breaks to enjoy your time.

💬 Which sestiere is your favorite to wander through when you visit?

Ever notice these metal carts parked along the canals early in the morning? 🧹🚤

Quick guest reminder: If you’re staying in Venice, don't forget to take your sorted waste out before 8:30 AM! You can hand your bags directly to the collector at your door or bring them down to these canal-side carts and docked boats.

📲 Want the full breakdown? Check out our previous video post to see how the whole process works—including the daily recycling schedule, Sunday rules, and where the garbage boats take everything next!
