Early May in Japan hits differently 🌼

At Showa Kinen Park, spring doesn’t end with cherry blossoms—it evolves. Fields of colorful flowers stretch endlessly, soft breezes carry the scent of the season, and wide green lawns invite you to slow down.

This is the perfect time for a picnic under the open sky, surrounded by nature at its finest. Because in Japan, beauty doesn’t stop at sakura—it simply changes its form.

Magome-juku: A Historic Post Town in Japan

Magome-juku is a well-preserved historic post town along the Nakasendo, an old route that once connected Kyoto and Tokyo during the Edo period. The town is known for its sloping stone-paved streets, traditional wooden buildings, and atmosphere that reflects old Japan.

Visitors can walk along the historic trail toward Tsumago-juku, enjoying mountain scenery, small waterfalls, and traditional houses along the way. The area also offers souvenir shops, cafés, and ryokan-style inns.

Magome-juku is a great destination for those interested in experiencing Japan’s historical side in a calm and natural setting.

Showa Day is observed on April 29 in Japan 🇯🇵

It is part of Golden Week, a series of national holidays that many people in Japan use for travel, rest, and family time.

This day is dedicated to reflecting on the Shōwa era (1926–1989), the reign of Emperor Showa. It was a significant period in Japan’s history, marked by major events including wartime experiences, post-war recovery, and rapid economic growth.

Showa Day is not about celebration in a festive sense. Instead, it encourages people to look back on this complex period, understand how it shaped modern Japan, and consider the lessons it offers for the future.
Today, it serves as a reminder of how history influences the present, and why reflection is important in moving forward.

🎏 Experience the energy of Hamamatsu Festival!

Held during Japan’s Golden Week, this vibrant celebration is famous for its giant kite battles in the daytime sky and beautifully decorated festival floats parading through the streets at night.

Watch powerful teams compete as massive kites soar above, then feel the rhythm of drums and cheers as illuminated floats are pulled through the city after dark.

A perfect mix of tradition, excitement, and local pride—this is a festival you won’t forget.

🎏 Japanese Children’s Day & Samurai Helmet 🎏

In Japan, May 5th is known as Children’s Day, a special holiday to celebrate the happiness and growth of children.

One of the traditional decorations is the Kabuto (samurai helmet).
It represents strength, courage, and protection — just like the helmets worn by samurai warriors in the past.

Families display kabuto at home with the wish that their children will grow up healthy, strong, and brave.

As I also have a son, we displayed a kabuto at home to celebrate and wish for his healthy and strong future.

You may also see colorful carp streamers (koinobori) flying in the sky, symbolizing success and determination.

A beautiful tradition filled with love, hope, and strength 🇯🇵✨

In Japan, we celebrate Children’s Day on May 5th.
One of the most beautiful traditions is flying Koinobori (carp streamers).

These colorful carp flags symbolize strength, courage, and success, inspired by the legend of a carp swimming upstream and becoming a dragon.
Families display them to wish for their children’s healthy growth and bright future. 🎏

This stunning view is from Aikawa Mizube Park in Gifu, where hundreds of koinobori swim across the sky above the river. It’s a peaceful and picturesque spot, perfect for experiencing traditional Japanese culture and seasonal beauty.

If you visit Gifu in spring, this is definitely a must-see! 🌸✨
