Heavy rain last night caused a mudslide on the A*o mountains that closed two of the roads up to Kusasenri and Nakadake volcano from the northern side of the A*o caldera, the southern route from Minami A*o remained open. (The person I spoke to said they were hoping to re-open the road by the end of today) But tomorrow more rain is forecast in the A*o area so keep an eye out for possible road closures. The rain was also responsible for creating this picturesque pond in Nakadake volcano's lower crater area. And the temperature was a refreshing 20C

Got up early and headed to A*o for a walk.
Starting from Kusasenri carpark I took the Kishimadake route around both of the craters, believed to be 3 or 4 thousand years old.
Even though I started at 8, it did get hot pretty quickly, so if you're hiking in A*o over the summer make sure you have a hat, a drink, hiking boots and long trousers - on parts of the route the grass was up to my shoulders and there were plenty of thistles hiding away too.
However, the breeze was refreshing and the views sublime 💕

If you're visiting shrines this summer you may come across a large straw ring in front of the building with a confusing diagram of instructions on how to walk through it. This is to celebrate the "Nagoshi no Oharai" festival, a festival to ward off misfortune and impurities held in the summer and winter.

To pray for good health you walk in a horizontal figure 8 through the large straw ring before praying at the shrine.

Also if you visit Takachiho gorge at the moment you might notice a scattering of white doll shaped papers on the rocks near the river around the Araragi bridge area these are from yesterday's "ningyo nagashi" (doll floating) ritual to ward off evil spirits and ill health where paper dolls are cast away to flow down the river

Summer flowers in bloom at Higotai Park in Ubuyama A*o: long yellow day lilies, higotai balloon thistles, tiger lilies and purple loosestrife can all be seen at present. The rare higotai balloon thistles are just coming into bloom and will be at their best in August and early September.

Summer festival sea*on is upon us! On August 5th there's one at A*obonosato Kugino in Minami A*o. A*o has cooler weather and less humidity than in Kumamoto city so might be one of the more refreshing ones 😄✨🎆🎇🧨
