🌿 Spring is nature’s original farmer’s market—and it’s hiding right outside your door.

From ramps and fiddleheads to nettles, wild violets, and more, early spring is packed with edible plants that are fresh, flavorful, and only around for a short window. Many of these “weeds” are actually nutrient-rich ingredients just waiting to be discovered (and turned into some pretty amazing meals).

The key? Learn how to identify them correctly, harvest responsibly, and enjoy them while they’re at their peak—because by summer, they’re gone or past their prime.

If you’ve ever been curious about foraging—or just want to eat more seasonally—this guide is a great place to start.

Spring foraging just got even better…

Fiddleheads—the tightly coiled shoots of young ferns—are one of the season’s most unique (and fleeting) wild edibles. They pop up in damp woods and along riverbanks for just a few short weeks, making them a true “blink and you’ll miss it” find.

But not all fiddleheads are edible—learning to identify the right ones (hello, ostrich fern!) and harvesting responsibly is key.

From pickling to frying to tossing into soups and stir-fries, my guide walks you through how to forage, prep, and enjoy this wild spring delicacy.

Spring is wild ramp season.

Wild ramps (aka wild leeks) are one of the first edible plants to emerge after winter, with a bold garlic-onion flavor and a very short window to enjoy them.

From learning how to identify them in the forest to harvesting responsibly (leave those roots!) and turning them into everything from pesto to ramp butter, this guide covers it all.

I am on a three day cultural tour with Localinpty Community by Víctor Peretz in the San Blas islands. The Guna people have welcomed me with such generosity. I got to paddle the native Cayuga boat.
Then two local fifth and sixth grade girls paddled me over to their island to see their school. We celebrated with ice cream.

Hiking India Dormido in El Valle de Antón feels like moving through layers of Panama’s natural and cultural history at once. The trail winds through lush jungle alive with birdsong, crosses small streams, and climbs onto an airy ridge line where the green crater valley stretches out below in every direction. Petroglyphs at the beginning of the hike tell the story of ancient civilizations. Waterfalls are cooling stations. The trail is steep but the views are the reward for the effort.

Thinking about hiking El Caminito del Rey in Spain? This dramatic cliffside walkway winds through a stunning gorge and offers incredible views—but it’s not the right hike for everyone. While the route is relatively short and considered easy to moderate, the real challenge is the height and narrow boardwalk sections that cling to the canyon walls.

Before you go, it’s worth asking: Are you comfortable with heights? Do you enjoy unique, scenic walks more than strenuous hikes? In this post, I break down who will love this famous trail—and who might want to skip it.

The Caminito del Rey in Spain is a spectacular cliffside hike, best suited for travelers who enjoy spectacular scenery, moderate walking, and the thrill of high, exposed viewpoints. Is this hike right for you?
