Amboseli....`Empusel` in the Masai language meaning `salty dust` harbours 5 immensely biodiverse habitats within a small area, and is fed by underground streams from Mt Kilimanjaro (the tallest stand alone mountain in the world).
Its dusty salt pan turns into a giant lake in the rainy season teaming with hippos, crocs and hundreds of bird species including flamingoes. But the huge `super tusker`elephants are its defining species with their signature wet socks (from feeding in the swampy marshes). Like the mighty Kili, they seem to guard this extraordinary ecosystem that serves as a critrical migration corridor and dispersal area for wildlife.
The true guardians of this ecosystem, however are the local Masai communities that have lived in peaceful coexistence with the wildlife around them for centuries, have almost zero carbon footprint, and are now key players in the protection of some of the world`s most threatened species.
