Deep in the tropical forests of Central Africa lives an elusive and little-known giant, the Hylochoerus meinertzhageni, better known as the giant forest boar.

With a body that can exceed 2 meters in length and weigh up to 275 kilos, it is the largest member of the Suidae family, surpassing even the famous European wild boar.

Despite its imposing size and curved tusks that could intimidate any predator, this colossus prefers stealth to confrontation, moving through dense vegetation with surprising agility.

Its scientific name honors Richard Meinertzhagen, a controversial British civil servant and naturalist who collected the first specimens in the early 20th century. 💭🐗

One animal left, watched day and night, because the last time we looked away, two were lost.

The world’s only known white giraffe is alive in Kenya’s Ishaqbini Hirola Community Conservancy.

Rangers monitor him around the clock. They fitted him with a GPS tracker that pings his location so they can move fast if anything looks wrong.

This is not hype. In March 2020, a white female and her calf were killed by poachers. Their deaths left this lone male as the only one we know of.

He isn’t albino. He has leucism, which reduces pigment but leaves his eyes dark. In the open savannah, his pale coat makes him easy to spot. Easy to love, too.

Protection here means patience. Check the signal. Scan the horizon. Keep the routes clear. Every quiet hour is a small win.

One giraffe is not a plan for a species. But he is a promise. If we can keep one animal safe, maybe we can keep a future alive as well.
