Take a look at Jack’s Camp, on the edge of the Makgadikgadi Pans.

Set in the heart of the Makgadikgadi — one of the largest salt pans on earth — it combines a beautifully restored 1940s safari aesthetic with serious guiding credentials. Ten Bedouin-style tents, proper full-length canvas, antiques throughout, and a team of naturalists who know this ecosystem better than almost anyone.

The game viewing is unlike anything you will find in the Okavango or on the Chobe. On the pans, you have meerkats, brown hyenas, and the zebra migration that moves through the area from November to April.

Off the pans, guided quad bike rides at sunset and swimming with the habituated meerkat mob in the morning are genuinely not things you can do anywhere else.

Another one of our favourite picks for a Namibia itinerary — Wilderness Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp, in the remote Hoanib Valley of north-west Namibia.

This is proper, wild Namibia. There is no road access — you fly in by light aircraft, and from the moment you land, you are in one of the most remote wildlife areas on the continent.

Eight tented rooms, each positioned to face the dry Hoanib riverbed where desert-adapted elephant, giraffe and lion move through on their own schedule.

The camp also offers fly-in day trips to the Skeleton Coast — one of the most dramatic coastlines in the world, where the desert meets the cold Atlantic and the fog rolls in across rusting shipwrecks.

One of our favorite picks for a Zimbabwe itinerary — Victoria Falls River Lodge, on the banks of the Zambezi.

It’s the only privately owned lodge inside Zambezi National Park, and it earns its place on our itineraries every time. Game drives through the park, the roar of the falls in the distance, elephants moving through the bush below your deck, and a lodge that delivers on the luxury side of things, too.

We love it for its range. Nineteen tented suites, each with a private plunge pool, six treetop suites on Kandahar Island, two private villas, and the intimate Malachite camp, a short boat ride upriver, for guests wanting something quieter and closer to the falls.

Whether we’re planning a family trip, a honeymoon, or a small group itinerary, this lodge works.

Take a look at another one of our favourite properties in southern Africa.

At Zarafa Camp, four tented suites sit on the edge of the forest above Zibadianja Lagoon, the very source of the famous Savute Channel.

The suites are huge, over 300 square metres of canvas and recycled hardwood, each with a copper bath, an outdoor shower and a private plunge pool looking out over the water.

Every suite also comes with its own professional camera and zoom lens to use during your stay, and you take the photos home with you.

The lagoon does the entertaining. In the dry season, buffalo and elephant arrive by the hundreds, hippos grunt through the night, and wild dogs usually den near camp each year. Lion, leopard, cheetah, roan and sable all move through the reserve, and the African skimmer colony nearby is a treat for birders.

Galdessa Camp, on the Galana River in Tsavo East National Park. One of our favourite picks for a safari itinerary.

Staying at Galdessa Camp or Galdessa Little supports the Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s conservation work in this part of the park. From camp you can visit their elephant reintegration unit and meet the orphan you’ve adopted. Drive Tsavo’s red, rusty roads. End the day with dinner with hippo’s in the river below.

A few frames from last week with one of our private guides, .carrhartley staying at .sand.river in the Maasai Mara.

Black rhino in the open, giraffe drifting through long grass, birdlife everywhere you look, and nothing but the Maasai Mara in every direction.

It is currently Kenya’s green season.

A quieter time to be out on safari, and a rather special one. Room to notice the smaller things. The flora, the birdlife, the tracks between sightings.

Some of our favourite weeks of the year.
