Lake Nakuru is a hidden gem that captivates the heart with its compact charm and diverse landscapes—perfect for first-time safari adventurers and families, even those with little ones in tow. On my last trip, I was thrilled to see waterbuck, impala, buffalo, and Rothschild’s giraffe grazing right by the roadside. I even spotted a leopard—uncharacteristically lounging in broad daylight among the majestic yellowwood acacia trees! In the southern flatlands, lions basked lazily in the sun, while the occasional rhino strolled along the shimmering lakeshore.

However, the landscape of Lake Nakuru has evolved dramatically over the years. Once a vibrant soda lake teeming with thousands of flamingos, it has swelled significantly due to heavy rains and floods in the Rift Valley since 2012. Some of the game-driving tracks and campsites have been submerged (even the Main Gate has relocated to higher ground!). Despite these changes, the influx of freshwater has resulted in flourishing animal populations, ensuring sightings remain plentiful.

While it may not provide the raw wilderness some seek, Lake Nakuru is incredibly navigable, and a guided game drive around the park can be completed in just about three hours. My top tip? Pack a picnic and take in the stunning views of the lake’s ever-changing shapes and colours from the lookout at Baboon Cliffs.

Amboseli National Park is a gem that captures the heart of every visitor. Despite sometimes bustling with game-viewing vehicles, its charm is undeniable. The journey from Nairobi is a breeze thanks to the newly paved C102 road, leading you right into the heart of this wildlife haven. Once you’ve arrived, navigating the park is easy, with a fantastic selection of accommodations ranging from cosy Kenya Wildlife Service campsites to luxurious 5-star safari lodges.

What truly makes Amboseli special is the abundance of wildlife all around you. The animals are relaxed and accustomed to the presence of vehicles, which allows for incredible up-close encounters. You’ll marvel at the magnificent elephants and buffalo gracefully wading through the lush marshes, and you’ll be captivated by the sight of thousands of herbivores dotting the open plains near Ol Tukai, where I had the pleasure of staying with my clients.

While Mt. Kilimanjaro proudly stands in Tanzania, the most breathtaking vistas of Africa’s highest peak are found in the enchanting Amboseli National Park. Here, majestic elephants—boasting impressive tusks and an undeniable presence—are a common sight. I’ve never felt as close to these magnificent creatures as I have in Amboseli, where witnessing them roam the plains or enjoy a leisurely wallow in the swamps, with Kilimanjaro as a stunning backdrop, creates an unforgettable East African safari memory.

But the wonders of Amboseli don’t stop with elephants. Lions can often be spotted lounging near the lodges within the park, while giraffes, zebras, and a variety of antelope add to the vibrant tapestry of wildlife.
