This past weekend, 7 members of the African Ascents team completed an intensive 2-day Wilderness First Aid course hosted at Batian View and facilitated by the incredible instructors from SOLO Schools Africa โ€” Kanja, Melissa, and Ruguru. ๐Ÿ”๏ธ๐Ÿฉบโ›‘๏ธ

The training was rigorous, practical, and deeply valuable. From learning how to safely approach and assess a scene, gain patient consent, and perform systematic evaluations, to treating suspected fractures, sprains, asthma attacks, anaphylactic shock, heat-related illnesses, hypothermia, and more โ€” every scenario reinforced one important truth: in the wilderness, situations can escalate incredibly quickly. ๐ŸŒง๏ธโš ๏ธ๐Ÿฅพ

At African Ascents, mountain safety is never an afterthought. It is a core part of who we are and how we operate. Whether guiding clients at altitude or navigating remote environments, proper preparation and high-quality medical training are essential. ๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ๐Ÿ•๏ธ๐Ÿงญ

Training with reputable organizations and experienced instructors who truly understand mountain environments is an absolute must. The knowledge, judgement, and confidence gained in these settings can make all the difference when it matters most. ๐Ÿš‘ ๐ŸŒ

A huge thank you to the SOLO Schools Africa team for sharing their expertise and challenging us throughout the weekend. Weโ€™re proud to continue investing in the skills that help keep our team and our climbers safe in the mountains. ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพโ›ฐ๏ธ

We're visiting the Mountains of the Moon ๐ŸŒ in September and we'd love you to join us.

If you'd like to know more about the trip and chat with one of our lead guides, Julian Wright, join us on Monday the 30th of March at 10:30am Kenyan time for a short presentation of Julian's Rwenzori tales.

There will be ample time for Q&A too - after which we're pretty sure you'll be Googling flights into Entebbe โœˆ๏ธ

For the link - please email [email protected] ๐Ÿ“ฉ

*6 - 13 September 2026*

Join Julian Wright and Ciaran Brown for an 8 or 10 day alpine adventure - come and explore the Mountains of the Moon ๐ŸŒ” with us this September!

The legendary Rwenzori Mountains ๐Ÿฆ rise in dramatic, mist-shrouded beauty along the border of Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Famous for their snow-capped equatorial peaks, ancient glaciers, and otherworldly giant lobelias ๐ŸŒฑand groundsels, they offer one of Africaโ€™s most wild, remote, and biodiverse alpine landscapes.

Trekking in the Rwenzoris ๐Ÿ—ป exposes travellers to everything from giant chameleons to glacial ascents of Margherita Peak at 5109 masl - itโ€™s a true expedition-style climb โ€” remote, dramatic, and far more rugged than its altitude alone suggests

At the end of January African Ascents had the pleasure of hosting one of the biggest group treks we've led on Mount Kenya. While it was large, with 20 trekkers, what was most special about it was the organisation behind the trek - ๐Ÿš‘

Dharura support a wide range of hospital and community projects (mainly in Kenya), and engage with the wider Global Health community to improve the provision of, and effective access to emergency care globally.

Trekking safely with a group of this size requires a lot of support and we were so happy to receive Dharura's Joint Lead for Global EM Fellowships, Andy Lockyer's, feedback:

"Just to let you guys know now weโ€™ve recovered! The trip was perfect. Everyone from the guides to the porters were so professional and friendly, and we felt in such safe hands. Seeing other groups near the summit, that obviously isnโ€™t always the case for others."

Even better was feedback on one our most experienced guides, Boniface:

"Boni also dealt really nicely with the way I was our 'sea-level group leader' so took complete control on the mountain but joined our own group dynamic so I could still support our team as a lead. We would love to make this an annual event so would be keen to start making preparations for next year in due course!"

Dharura were kind enough to do emergency training with our mountain team in the afternoons in camp, which was an exciting gift for our staff - learning new things is always useful, especially for emergencies.

The group completed our unique 5 Day Chogoria route which ascends the eastern side of the mountain and descends the western side. If you're interested in learning more about our treks or possibly bringing your organisation to Mount Kenya - please get in touch - ๐Ÿ“ฉ

Over the past few weeks, our up-and-coming technical guides had the privilege of intensive training with certified trainers Jack and Ella ๐Ÿง—โ€โ™€๏ธ.

With the busy holiday season ahead ๐ŸŽ„, it was the perfect time to refresh and sharpen skills. From full days at the Nanyuki Climbing Gym to time on the rock at Tumaren ๐Ÿชจ, the journey culminated in a magical week on Mount Kenya โœจ๐Ÿ”๏ธ.

Based in the Teleki Valley, the team honed their mountaineering skills ๐Ÿงญ, summited Point John, and reached Nelion โ€” Mount Kenyaโ€™s second-highest peak at 5188m ๐Ÿ’ช.

At African Ascents, weโ€™re passionate about raising guiding standards on our home mountain ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช and fostering a safer, more professional culture while playing outside ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ๐Ÿ”๏ธ.
