🚫 Know your rights. Exploitation is never part of the job.
A recent case in Lower Hutt has highlighted how some employers misuse immigration processes to exploit workers. Following an investigation, a company was sentenced this week after serious breaches were found, including underpaying migrant workers, and shifting visa related costs onto workers.
This behaviour is unlawful - and knowing the warning signs matters.
✅ Know your rights:
• You should never be asked to pay for a job or for the cost of advertising a role. These costs are the employer’s responsibility.
• You must be paid correctly for every hour you work.
• Your employment conditions must be fair and free from pressure, threats, or coercion.
• You can ask for help at any time - support is available even if you’re unsure about your visa situation.
⚠️ Warning signs of exploitation
• Requests for money linked to getting or keeping your job
• Pay that doesn’t match your employment agreement
• Long hours that aren’t recorded or paid
• Employers linking your job or pay to your visa status
• Pay deductions you didn’t agree to or don’t understand
If you or someone you know is experiencing any of these issues, confidential help is available. Speaking up helps protect workers -and supports employers who do the right thing.
