Day 3 of the Khmer New Year 2026, which falls on Thursday, April 16, is known as Vearak Loeng Sak (or Veareak Laeung Sak). This is the final and most spiritually significant day of the celebration, marking the official "turning" into the new year.
The name translates roughly to "The Day of the New Year’s Era," and it focuses on purification, renewal, and receiving final blessings for the year ahead.
# # # Key Traditions of Vearak Loeng Sak
Pithi Srang Preah (Bathing the Buddha):** This is the most iconic ritual of Day 3. People use scented water (often flavored with flowers) to gently wash Buddha statues at the pagoda. This act symbolizes washing away past mistakes, purifying the spirit, and inviting peace and prosperity.
Bathing Elders and Parents: Following the same theme of respect, children and grandchildren prepare warm, scented water to wash the feet and hands of their parents and grandparents. In return, the elders give their heartfelt blessings and advice for the coming year.
Mountain of Sand (Final Ceremony):** People complete the sand stupas (Phnum Khsach) they began on previous days, often circling them and offering prayers. This ritual is believed to bring longevity and success.
Bang Soka (Monk's Blessings):** Monks perform a final ceremony to bless the people and the spirits of their ancestors, officially sealing the start of the new year with merit and good karma.

1. Chol Chhoung (Throwing the 'Chhoung')
This is a very popular game among young men and women. The Chhoung is made from a tightly rolled krama, then tied to have a tail.
How to Play:** Divided into two teams (male and female). One team throws the Chhoung to the other team. If the other team cannot catch it, they are considered losers and must dance according to instructions or have the team that threw the Chhoung "catch" them as prisoners.
Meaning:** Increases agility and creates opportunities for young men and women to have good relationships and get to know each other more closely.
2. Bos Angkunh (Throwing 'Angkunh')
This is a game that uses Angkunh seeds (hard black wild fruit seeds) to play on a level ground area.
How to Play:** The 'Koy' (standing Angkunh seeds) are planted, and they are thrown to hit them. It has multiple stages such as throwing, shooting, turning on knees, and so on.
Meaning:** Trains the mind to focus well (Concentration) and measures the accuracy of the eyes and hands.
3. Teanh Proat (Tug of War)
This is a game that uses pure brute strength and requires teamwork.
How to Play:** Divided into two teams of equal strength. Each team holds the rope to pull in opposite directions. The team that manages to pull the central marker over to their side is the winner.
Meaning:** This is a perfect lesson in solidarity."** Without cooperation and pulling in sync, even with strong power, one cannot win.
4. Leak Kanseng (Hiding the Scarf)
This is a game that both children and adults enjoy playing because it is exciting and fun.
How to Play:** People sit in a circle. One person holding a scarf walks around, then secretly hides the scarf behind someone's back. If you are hidden to without knowing, and the person walking arrives back to pull the scarf to beat you, then you have to run around the circle.
Meaning:** Instructs people to be always cautious and increases intelligence in observing surroundings.
5. Traditional Folk Dancing
After exerting energy playing games, Cambodian people always gather together to dance to Khmer music rhythms:
Ramvong and Ram Kbach:** These are circle dances that show the gentleness of hand gestures and footsteps following the rhythm of the hand drum. They are symbols of harmony in the community.
Saravan:** This is a rhythm that is more lively and joyful than Ramvong. It is often danced facing each other or danced to faster rhythms, which makes the atmosphere more festive.
