Constructed in 1908 and completed in 1909, the Red Mosque was commissioned by Colombo’s Indian Muslim community to serve as a central place of worship. Designed by Habibu Lebbe Saibu Lebbe, an untrained architect, the mosque features distinctive pomegranate-shaped domes and a blend of Gothic Revival and Indo-Islamic styles. Before the development of modern landmarks, it served as a navigational aid for sailors approaching Colombo’s port.
