Kariņš: more widespread use of face masks will likely be needed in Latvia.
Latvia is the “last island in Europe where the infection has not spread widely” and the Ministry of Health has to start thinking how to protect the population from COVID-19 while allowing the economy to continue to operate, said Kariņš.
If the situation in neighboring Lithuania and Estonia deteriorates and all travelers from these countries will have to comply with 14-day self-isolation, this would actually mean stopping the movement of people, said Kariņš.

In the current epidemiological situation, Latvia cannot avoid more widespread use of face masks to limit COVID-19 spread, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš told Latvian Television August 26.

Jāņi (summer solstice)
Jāņi is the most popular Latvian festivity. It is a day when cities vacate and every civil servant and bank clerk shows their pagan side. It originated as an ancient fertility festival celebrated after sowing the crops and before gathering harvest.

Latvians sing, dance, eat and are merry during Jāņi. Cheese with caraway seeds, meat patties and beer are a must for every table. People light bonfires, jump over them and celebrate until the sunrise. Romantic couples leave the crowd to look for the “flower of the fern”, which is alleged to bloom only in the night of Jāņi.

Traditional festivities in Latvia are a mix of Christian and pagan traditions. Jāņi or Līgo summer solstice celebration is the most popular Latvian festivity.

As Midsummer approaches, the Latvia National Film Center (NKC) is offering 10 films on the website filmas.lv to be accessible for free all over the world, NKC said on June 18.
The portal filmas.lv began the online film festival tradition last year. This time, 10 films will be available for 5 days, each revealing a side of Latvia in history and nowadays.

The films available this year are Blakus (2019), documentary series Pavasaris, Vasara, Rudens, Ziema (2018), Bille (2018), Es esmu latvietis (1990), Limuzīns Jāņu nakts krāsā (1981), Dāvana vientuļai sievietei (1973), Motociklu vasara (1975).

Films are available starting June 20 up to midnight of June 24. Happy Midsummer!

Sculptor Aigars Bikše's sculpture "Doctors for the World" dedicated to doctors is unveiled

Thanks to the work of doctors and nurses from all over the world during the Covid-19 pandemic, a sculpture created by sculptor Aigars Bikše will be unveiled at the Latvian Academy of Arts . Its height is six meters, and anyone else next to the bright doctor in a coverall, with a hat and gloves will feel like a small child. The title of the work is "Doctors for the World".
