Towards a New Era of Sustainable Forest Governance in Bab Taza

Last Thursday, I had the privilege of participating in a participatory workshop organized as part of Morocco's "Forests of Morocco 2020–2030" Strategy, dedicated to the establishment of the Forest Development Organization (ODF) for the rural commune of Bab Taza.

The workshop brought together representatives from government institutions, local authorities, civil society organizations, cooperatives, local associations, and other stakeholders to discuss a shared vision for the sustainable management and development of our forest landscapes.

The discussions focused on: 🌿 Sustainable forest governance. 🌿 Conservation of biodiversity and natural resources. 🌿
Strengthening local participation in decision-making. 🌿
Creating sustainable economic opportunities for rural communities🌿

The role of ecotourism in supporting conservation and local development.

Ecotourism has an important role to play in protecting our forests while creating sustainable livelihoods for local communities. Through responsible tourism, environmental education, and collaboration with local stakeholders, we can help ensure that conservation and development go hand in hand.

The forests of Bab Taza and Talassemtane are among Morocco's greatest natural treasures. Their future depends on strong partnerships between public institutions, local communities, associations, and responsible tourism initiatives.

I look forward to contributing to the next stages of this important initiative and working together toward a more sustainable future for our region.

🌿 Ecotourism in Chefchaouen: Elevating Rural Communities Beyond the Blue City

Today, Chefchaouen — the famous Blue City — attracts visitors from all over the world. This visibility is a blessing… but it also invites an important reflection:

👉 Are travelers discovering the full richness of the province — or only a small surface of it?

The truth is striking: the town of Chefchaouen represents only a small portion of a province layered with deep cultural, historical, and natural heritage. Yet most visitors remain concentrated within the blue walls of the medina, often for short, photo-focused visits.

Mass tourism in the city certainly brings movement and visibility. But it also tends to be:
– Short in duration
– Highly concentrated
– Focused on photography over experience
– Limited in its impact on surrounding rural communities

Over time, when any destination becomes heavily image-driven, it can begin to lose some of the quiet authenticity that once defined it. The real challenge — and opportunity — is to rebalance the visitor experience.

🌱 Why Rural Ecotourism Matters

Ecotourism in the Rif Mountains offers something profoundly different.
It invites travelers to slow down, to walk, to listen, and to connect with landscapes and communities that have preserved their rhythms for generations.

When developed responsibly, rural ecotourism becomes a powerful engine to:

✅ Generate direct income for village families
✅ Support women’s cooperatives and local producers
✅ Create meaningful work for mountain guides and muleteers
✅ Encourage young people to remain rooted in their communities
✅ Preserve traditional knowledge and agricultural landscapes
✅ Protect the fragile ecosystems of the Talassemtane region

This is tourism that circulates locally and sustainably.

🏔️ Beyond the Blue Walls

Chefchaouen’s beauty is undeniable — and we are proud of it.

But the deeper soul of the region lives beyond the photogenic streets. It lives in:

– Mountain villages tucked into the Rif
– Terraced fields shaped by generations
– Forest paths of Talassemtane National Park
– Traditional rural hospitality
– Living Amazigh and Jbala cultural heritage

When travelers step outside the medina and into the mountains, their journey transforms from sightseeing into true cultural encounter.

⚖️ Toward a More Meaningful Balance

This is not about opposing the success of the Blue City. It is about expanding the story.

✔️ Yes to vibrant city visits
✔️ Yes to cultural discovery in the medina
✔️ And equally — yes to immersive rural experiences that uplift local communities

Because the long-term sustainability of Chefchaouen province depends on tourism that reaches beyond the walls and into the living landscape.

🤝 Our Commitment

At Ecotourisme Randonnées Chefchaouen, we are deeply committed to a model of tourism that:

🌿 Respects nature
🏡 Supports rural families
👣 Creates authentic human connections
⛰️ Preserves the identity and dignity of the Rif

Every hike, every village stay, and every encounter is designed with one guiding principle:

👉 Tourism that gives back more than it takes.

✨ If you are ready to discover the real depth of the Rif Mountains — beyond the postcards — we warmly welcome you to walk with us.

Chefchaouen is often photographed, but it is first and foremost lived.

Beyond the blue walls, there are villages, mountain paths, women’s work, and daily rhythms that shape life here.

For us, eco-tourism is not about activities or numbers.

It is about belonging to a place without disturbing it.

This is the Morocco we care for and share — slowly, and with respect.
