Mandalay, located in central Myanmar, is the country's second-largest city and its cultural hub. It was founded in 1857 by King Mindon Min and served as the last royal capital of Myanmar before the British annexation in 1885. The city is named after Mandalay Hill, a prominent landmark in the area.

Mandalay was a significant political, cultural, and economic center for the Burmese kingdom. It is known for its historical sites, such as the Mandalay Palace, Mahamuni Pagoda, and several monasteries.

Despite its turbulent history, including World War II and the Japanese occupation, Mandalay remains a vibrant city steeped in Burmese culture, with a growing tourism industry and a unique blend of old and new.

Mandalay's significance continues today, serving as an important religious and commercial center. The city is also famous for its handicrafts, including traditional gold leaf, marionettes, and textiles. It is surrounded by various ancient cities, such as Amarapura and Sagaing, which are part of Myanmar's rich historical landscape.

Mandalay is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Burma. Located 445 miles (716 km) north of Yangon on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, the city has a population of one million, and is the capital of Mandalay Region.

Mandalay is the economic hub of Upper Burma and considered the centre of Burmese culture. A continuing influx of Chinese immigrants, mostly from Yunnan Province, in the past twenty years, has reshaped the city's ethnic makeup and increased commerce with China.Despite Naypyidaw's recent rise, Mandalay remains Upper Burma's main commercial, educational and health centre.
