🌊Virtual conference on Advancing Sustainable Ocean Management (SOM) Education

On 20 June 2025, the Seychelles Department of Blue Economy, in collaboration with Seychelles Conservation and Climate Adaptation Trust (SeyCCAT) and the Secretariat, successfully hosted the Virtual conference on Advancing Sustainable Ocean Management (SOM) Education.

This pioneering event brought together over 100 educators, policymakers, and from across the to share knowledge and promote through the SOM Education Project — the first global initiative of its kind for Key Stage 4 students (ages 12–13).

🌐 The conference highlighted the power of and online engagement in shaping a sustainable ocean future.

💡The short course on Renewable Energy Transition - Indian Ocean Region (1 July to 8 August 2025) has attracted a high level of participation from IORA Member States: Bangladesh, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Malaysia, Mauritius, Oman, Seychelles, Somalia, and Tanzania. On completion of the course, participants will have developed a deeper understanding of the energy transition. They will have acquired knowledge of how technology, policy and society can shape the integration of the transition and enable economy wide decarbonisation through the electrification of all energy uses.

Secretariat participated in the Western Indian Ocean Regional Conference on Rescue and Assistance at Sea from 24 to 25 June 2025 at Labourdonnais Hotel in Port Louis, Mauritius.

The Seminar Program on “Emerging Technologies in Earthquake Monitoring and Risk Reduction” and “Experiences of National Earthquake Monitoring Center of Türkiye”, was held on 24 June 2025 on virtual mode.

The seminar programme was organized by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority of Turkiye (AFAD), aiming to enhance regional preparedness and resilience in disaster management in the Indian Ocean Region. On 25 June 2025, as part of the IORA Strategic Framework of Action on Marine Debris, a clean-up activity was organized by in part of Mauritius' mangroves, a vulnerable coastal ecosystem, bringing together partners and over 100 students committed to protecting the . 🌳

This initiative aligned with the global efforts and the vision expressed in the Nice Call to Action at the United Nations Conference on the Oceans 2025 (UNOC 3) to promote ocean knowledge, wetland preservation and sustainable coastal zone management.
