Chichén Itzá still hasn’t reopened yet, but hopefully it will open again sometime this week. In the meantime, here are some photos from a recent guided visit we did at the site.

This couple was driving from the Riviera Maya and picked me up in Valladolid so we could do a private guided tour together at Chichén Itzá. We spent a couple of hours exploring the site and talking about Maya history, architecture, and symbolism.

For travelers who already have their own rental car, this is also an option we offer. We can meet in Valladolid and begin the experience from there.

Chichén Itzá todavía no reabre, pero esperamos que pueda abrir nuevamente durante esta semana. Mientras tanto, aquí les compartimos algunas fotos de una visita guiada reciente que realizamos en el sitio.

Esta pareja venía manejando desde la Riviera Maya y me recogieron en Valladolid para realizar juntos un recorrido privado en Chichén Itzá. Pasamos un par de horas recorriendo el sitio y hablando sobre historia maya, arquitectura y simbolismo.

Para quienes ya cuentan con auto propio, esta también es una opción que ofrecemos. Podemos encontrarnos en Valladolid y comenzar la experiencia desde ahí.

Some trips become much more than just vacations.

This beautiful group of friends has known each other for more than 40 years, and together — along with two of their mothers — they came to Yucatán to celebrate friendship, life, memories, and new adventures together.

Over two different tours, we explored the pink flamingos and beaches of Celestún and Sisal from Mérida, and later met again in Valladolid after their journey on the Maya Train to visit Ek Balam and one of the incredible cenotes of the region.

Moments like these remind us that travel is not only about the places you visit, but also about the people you share them with.

Thank you for allowing us to be part of your memories in Mexico.

Algunos viajes se convierten en mucho más que unas vacaciones.

Este hermoso grupo de amigas se conoce desde hace más de 40 años, y juntas —acompañadas también por dos de sus mamás— vinieron a Yucatán para celebrar la amistad, la vida, los recuerdos y nuevas aventuras juntas.

Durante dos tours diferentes exploramos los flamingos y las playas de Celestún y Sisal saliendo desde Mérida, y después volvimos a encontrarnos en Valladolid tras su viaje en el Tren Maya para visitar Ek Balam y uno de los increíbles cenotes de la región.

Momentos como estos nos recuerdan que viajar no solamente se trata de los lugares que visitas, sino también de las personas con quienes compartes el camino.

The “Temple of the Bearded Man” at Chichén Itzá gets its name from a carved figure with apparent facial hair, something unusual in Maya art. Later colonial traditions connected this image to Kukulkán and descriptions of Quetzalcóatl as a white and bearded figure.

But was it truly meant to represent a “white bearded man,” or was that interpretation added centuries later during the colonial period?

Standing above the Great Ball Court, this temple may have served as a ceremonial stage where priests addressed the crowds during sacred rituals and performances.

¿El “Hombre Barbado” en Chichén Itzá?

El llamado “Templo del Hombre Barbado” recibe su nombre por una figura tallada con aparente barba, algo poco común en el arte maya. Con el tiempo, tradiciones coloniales relacionaron esta imagen con Kukulkán y las descripciones de Quetzalcóatl como un personaje blanco y barbado.

Pero, ¿realmente representaba a un “hombre blanco barbado”… o esa interpretación surgió siglos después durante la colonia?

Este templo, ubicado sobre el Gran Juego de Pelota, posiblemente funcionó como un escenario ceremonial donde sacerdotes hablaban a las multitudes durante rituales sagrados.
