Attention: Australian visitors, guests and other curious museum goers! 🇦🇺 The oldest European object ever found in Australia is in the Rijksmuseum.

After Willem Janszoon became the first European to map a section of Australia in 1606, in 1616, Dutch navigator Dirk Hartog became the first European to land on the shores of Western Australia. Before he and his party left, Dirk erected a wooden post and nailed a pewter kitchen plate to it, with text scratched into it, mentioning the year, the city where the voyage started (Amsterdam) and a couple of other prominent people with him.

81 years later in 1697, Dutch captain de Vlamingh found Hartog’s plate in the sand. He replaced it with a plate of his own and took Hartog’s plate back to the Netherlands. Eventually French explorers found de Vlamingh’s plate and it now is in a museum in Western Australia. And Hartog’s plate is in the Rijks, where you can view it today.

For more fun finds, you can take a private tour of the Rijksmuseum with me. Please visit the private tour page of my website, Amsterdam and You or email me at [email protected]

Two iconic hotels of Amsterdam:
Amrath- It began as the Scheepvaarthuis (Shipping house), which housed several different shipping companies. It is regarded as one of the quissessential examples of Amsterdam School architecture.
American- Just as imposing, it’s softer color and angles reflect it’s Art Nouveau style and two popular features are its water-themed fountain in front and the Art Deco Bar Americain inside.

One reason why a small group walking tour is the best is that it’s easy to talk to each other and meet other guests in a group. And if our last stop is a 17th century tasting room, sometimes we enjoy a drink together after the tour. Why not walk with us? For more info and to book:

Corso Sint Jansklooster Flower Parade was amazing. 12 huge floats completely covered in dahlias. The biggest surprise was how much mechanical movement they all had. This is dahlia season so there are quite a few flower parades going on now. This weekend is Corso Zundert, one of thd biggest flower parades in the world. 🌺🌸🌼

Amsterdam has some of the best museums in the world, including the well-known ones like the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Stedelijk Museum and the Anne Frank House. But the city also has many smaller museums (estimates range from 80-100) that are very interesting and worth exploring. Some museums even contain odd and quirky collections that reflect the uniqueness of our lovely city. If you have time, it’s a great idea to add one or two of these to your itinerary. The Balloonfiesta is happening this weekend (Wed thru Sat) in Barneveld. Watch as around 40 balloons take to the skies. And in the evening each balloon is illuminated for a spectacular show. I love how there is always something fun happening around Amsterdam and the Netherlands.
