One of my favorite residents of the Gallery of Honor in the Rijksmuseum, The Girl Dressed in Blue, has returned! 2 things stand out with this painting. First, her gaze makes you feel like you know her, she looks familiar because Verspronck paints her so life-like, as if she is a photograph. Second, as was the custom at the time, children were often dressed as adults. Which in some way is off-putting and unnatural. Make no mistake, one of the goals of portraits is to convey the wealth of its subject, even if the family does it through the likeness of their children. It was “Toddlers and Tiaras” of the 1600s.

The Rembrandthuis Museum is a must for any art, Rembrandt and/or architecture lover. Although most of Rembrandt’s famous paintings hang in the Rijksmuseum, Rembrandthuis gives you added context and backstory as it shows how he lived and worked in that exact place over 400 years ago.

The museum also has many of his drawings and etchings; gives demonstrations on how Rembrandt made his etchings; and two Rembrandt paintings, including the Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Deijman.

From now thru November 7, tattoo artists Schiffmacher & Veldhoen are giving tattoos based on famous Rembrandt works in the attic of the house.

The season is still going with my small group and private walking tours. Even fall and winter are great times to visit Amsterdam… and take a walking tour! Amsterdam and You… a great combination!

The new art exhibit, Chez Matisse-Masterpieces from Centre Pompidou, which highlights an extensive collection from modern art pioneer Henri Matisse and his contemporaries is fabulous. At the H’ART museum from now until February 14, you’ll find both paintings and sculptures by Matisse and works from Picasso, Pechstein, Chabaud and more.

Although it was crowded, space was available for same day or one day in advance.

🇳🇱HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMSTERDAM 🇳🇱
October 27, 1275 was the date of Count Floris V’s repeal of a toll tax, which made it easier for the people to trade and direct business. Although the city started well before, this was the date found on this document which was the oldest document ever found in Amsterdam.

Floris broke alliances with the King of England, who in 1296 conspired with other Dutch noblemen to kidnap Floris. Noblemen Gijsbrecht, Woerden and Velsen took Floris to Muidersloot Castle. When locals tried to intervene, the noblemen murdered Floris.

This incident is backstory for the plot of Joost van den Vondel’s play Gijsbrecht van Amstel, the first play produced for the new city theater in Amsterdam in 1638.
