Boudhanath Stupa, also known as Boudha Stupa, is one of the most significant Buddhist monuments in Nepal and one of the largest spherical stupas in the world. The 36-meter-tall stupa is the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal.
Architectural features of Boudhanath stupa:
โ€ข The stupa is based on a huge mandala, which symbolizes the universe.
โ€ข Its white dome represents the path to enlightenment.
โ€ข The square triangle on the top of the dome has the Buddha's all-seeing eyes painted, which symbolize wisdom and compassion.
โ€ข The 13 golden stairs above the trident symbolize the 13 stages of enlightenment.
โ€ข The stupa is surrounded by prayer wheels with Tibetan mantras and thousands of Buddhist pilgrims and tourists walk around the stupa praying.
The history, legends and Buddhist traditions surrounding the Boudhanath Stupa make its origin mysterious. While scientists argue about the exact date of this construction, many believe that the builders were in the Licchavi period (5โ€“6.). century) they raised the stupa.
