"It's not the destination, it's the journey." 🥾

The Makalu Base Camp trek is one of those treks where that saying really rings true. You walk through lush forests 🌲, pass small mountain lakes 💧, cross high passes, and follow a spectacular valley before finally reaching base camp beneath Mount Makalu 🏔️.

At 4,870 meters, the base camp is surrounded by glaciers, towering peaks, and vast mountain scenery. The scale of the landscape is difficult to appreciate until you are standing there yourself.🙌🏽

In the spring season, when Everest is full of expeditions and trekkers, there are still places where you can walk in peace. 🌄

While many trekkers follow the main route to Everest Base Camp, there are still side trails where it quickly becomes quiet.

Just a short turn away from the standard path, and the space opens up. The mountain views are still there, but the crowds are not. 👣

The Pikey Peak trek is not a busy tourist route. It’s quiet, cultural, and runs through the region Gomba and Chatra grew up in.

What a sunrise from Pikey Peak. 🌅⛰️

Early in the morning, the group reached the summit during golden hour and was rewarded with clear mountain views. Moments like this are why people start walking before sunrise. ⛰️

Clear views stretched across the Himalayas. From here, you can see Mount Everest, Makalu, and Mera Peak lined up on the horizon.

A view you don’t forget easily.

Afterwards, it was time to head back down to Pikey Base Camp for breakfast and to warm up. 👣

Chatra and his new trekking friends are walking through forests full of flowering rhododendrons this week.

This time of year, the trail is colorful and very pleasant to walk. The season adds a lot to the experience. 👣

The weather has been perfect, giving our group clear, unobstructed views of the peaks throughout the journey. It’s definitely a highlight of the trek to have the sun out. Of course, the mountains look their best as we move through the circuit. 🇳🇵🙌
