"Last spring, a 58-year-old retired teacher from Melbourne came to our office. She'd been planning EBC for three years. Two months later, she stood on Kala Patthar at sunrise β and cried for ten minutes. Then she booked Manaslu for 2027."
β Top questions β answered honestly
Is the Everest Base Camp Trek hard?
Moderate to challenging β but manageable for anyone who prepares. The trails are non-technical walking paths. The real challenge is altitude, not fitness. A 58-year-old can do it. A marathon runner can fail it. Acclimatisation is everything.
Can first-timers do it without prior trek experience?
Yes β most of our trekkers are first-timers. You need 4β5 months of preparation, consistent cardio, and weekend hikes with a loaded pack. Patience beats fitness on this trail.
Do I need a guide? (Mandatory since April 2023)
Yes. Nepal requires all foreign trekkers to have a licensed Nepali guide. Solo trekking is no longer permitted in this region. Beyond the legal requirement, a good guide is your safety net at altitude.
What is altitude sickness and how serious is it?
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) doesn't care about your fitness. Above 5,000m the air holds ~50% of sea-level oxygen. Symptoms include headache, nausea, and fatigue. If worsening at rest β descend immediately. Our guides are wilderness first-aid trained and make that call without debate.

ποΈ Best Time to Trek in 2026
π Autumn β Top Pick
Late Sep β November
Crystal-clear skies after monsoon. Best mountain visibility of the year. Crisp days, stable trails. Book early β October fills up fast.
πΈ Spring β Runner-Up
March β May
Rhododendron blooms on lower trails. Everest expedition teams active at Base Camp. Warm days, good views. Best: mid-March to late April.
βοΈ Winter
Dec β February
Stunning views, very few crowds. But -20Β°C nights, closed teahouses, and potential snow blockages. Experienced trekkers only.
π§οΈ Monsoon
June β August
Heavy rain, poor visibility, leeches on lower trails, frequent delays. Not recommended for first-timers.
β οΈ 6 Mistakes First-Timers Make
1
Going too fast. The itinerary's daily elevation limits exist for your safety. Trust your guide when they say no to pushing ahead.
2
Skipping acclimatisation hikes. The "rest day" hikes at Namche & Dingboche are not optional β they are physiologically essential.
3
Not breaking in boots. New boots on day one = blisters by day three. Wear them for 6β8 weeks before your trip.
4
Underestimating the cold. Nights above 4,000m can hit -10Β°C or colder. Proper layering is non-negotiable.
5
Not drinking enough water. Aim for 3β4 litres daily. Dehydration accelerates altitude sickness.
6
Ignoring worsening symptoms. Ego kills. If your headache, nausea, or coordination worsen at rest β tell your guide immediately.
