A quick follow-up to yesterday’s post about the i-Recycle Station.

Reflecting on why working with the Rotorua Sustainable Charter matters to us. Sustainability gets real when it is regional. Our bins line up with the council’s guidelines, so the recycling actually gets processed properly; our discussions with the charter joins us to a community of Rotorua businesses holding each other to a shared standard.

That distinction, between personal virtue and regional practice, is where meaningful environmental work gets done.

We wanted to mark Earth Day with something specific: a project we have been quietly working on for the last three months.

We completed the i-Recycle Station at Redwoods Oasis. A bespoke outdoor cabinet on the driveway, opposite the outdoor BBQ kitchen. Open the doors and three bins are revealed inside, signposted for General Waste, Recycling, and Glass in words and visual icons. Aligned line by line with the Rotorua Lakes Council waste management system and signed off by the Rotorua Sustainable Charter.

We went further on the inside of the doors: a Did You Know panel about the impact of recycling on the left, and a Kids Corner quiz on the right, with QR codes through to our Sustainability blogs for anyone curious enough to read on.

Most guests will pass it without a second thought, and that is the outcome we wanted: a system that works quietly in the background of a good stay, with a small invitation to learn for guests who look a little closer.

Sustainability, for us, lives in the systems running underneath a property. A guest who can find the right bin and sort in seconds is the mark of sustainability that actually works.

We are grateful to the Rotorua Sustainable Charter for the time they spent reviewing.

What is one small sustainability practice you have tightened up this year?

Today, we had the pleasure of hosting a wonderful multi-generational family from Canada 🇨🇦🍁, who are in New Zealand to celebrate a sister's upcoming wedding to a Kiwi.
