During our latest trip to northeastern Brazil, we had the opportunity to observe and photograph this beautiful bird species, endemic to the Brazilian Caatinga: the Pygmy Nightjar - Nyctipolus hirundinaceus. A truly special species of Brazil’s unique and fascinating Caatinga ecosystem.

The Pygmy Nightjar (Nyctipolus hirundinaceus) is a true winged gem, endemic to Brazil and one of the most fascinating species for birdwatchers. This tiny nightjar is a true test for those hoping to find it, as with its crepuscular and nocturnal habits it blends in perfectly with the leaf litter thanks to its cryptic plumage.
It is very restricted in range in parts of northeastern Brazil, and a very desirable target for birders.

The Araripe Manakin (Chiroxiphia bokermanni) is a passerine bird in the family Pipridae, currently classified as critically endangered. It was discovered in 1996 and scientifically described in 1998. Because of its crown-shaped crest, it received the Portuguese name soldadinho-do-araripe, meaning “little soldier of Araripe.” This species is under severe threat.
The habitat of the Araripe Manakin is extremely exclusive, fragile, and limited—often regarded as a true ecological oasis. It is endemic to the Chapada do Araripe, located in the state of Ceará in northeastern Brazil, and does not exist anywhere else on the planet. Its distribution is confined to a narrow strip of forest measuring only about 50 kilometers in length and 1 kilometer in width.
The primary threats to its survival—and the reason for its endangered status—are deforestation and the diversion of natural springs for urban projects, water parks, and agriculture, particularly banana plantations. These activities drastically reduce the already scarce space where this jewel of nature can reproduce and thrive.
