ICYMI: Tagbilaran City Advances Market Tourism in Central Visayas

The Department of Tourism Central Visayas, through its Tourism Development Division - Market and Product Development Unit, conducted the first Market (Palengke) Tourism Development Training for Tagbilaran City in close coordination with the City Government of Tagbilaran.

Held at Belian Hotel, the two-day training gathered city government personnel, the City Tourism Office, public market vendors, tour operators, and tour guides to explore how the local market can evolve into a meaningful tourism experience.

City Mayor Jane Yap joined the training and expressed her support for market tourism as a strategic avenue to stimulate the local economy and revitalize tourism. She underscored the need for innovative approaches amid rising costs, while envisioning Tagbilaran’s market tourism model as a benchmark for other destinations in Bohol and beyond. The initiative seeks to strengthen an authentic local experience that resonates with both Tagbilaranons and visiting local and foreign tourists.

Led by Supervising Tourism Operations Officer Riza Marie Macaibay, with Chef Richard Hao of the University of San Jose-Recoletos and Regional Trainer EnP Ruel Rigor as resource speakers, the sessions covered cultural resource mapping, local products and food, market heritage, sanitation, safety, and visitor experience.

Once developed, the Tagbilaran City Public Market is envisioned to become the first Market Tourism destination in Central Visayas, transforming an everyday community space into a living showcase of Tagbilaran’s food, culture, people, and local stories.
