Diving with Dugongs & Turtles in North Busuanga: A Soul-Stirring Encounter

If you ask me what my single favorite underwater memory in Palawan is after ten years, it isn’t a ship pe*******on — it is a quiet morning off the coast of North Busuanga watching a wild Dugong (sea cow) peacefully graze on shallow seagrass meadows. Northern Busuanga is one of the very last sanctuaries on Earth where a protected population of these rare, gentle marine mammals still thrives in their natural habitat.

The Experience: Unlike busy reef sites, dugong watching is a peaceful, eco-regulated adventure. Local marine rangers carefully limit boat numbers and group sizes. Entering the shallow, clear water and making eye contact with a 300-kilogram sea cow as it glides gracefully through the seagrass — often alongside green sea turtles — is a deeply moving, bucket-list experience.
How to Do It: Day trips to the northern seagrass bays can be booked directly from Coron Town or by staying up north in Busuanga. Responsible dive centers follow strict ethical guidelines (maintaining distance, no touching, no blocking their path) to ensure these endangered creatures remain protected.
