Hunza Valley is celebrated around the world for its breathtaking mountains, glaciers, and rich cultural heritage. Yet one of its greatest achievements often remains untold—the success of community-led wildlife conservation.
For more than three decades, the people of Gojal and the wider Hunza region have worked hand in hand with the Gilgit-Baltistan Wildlife Department, conservation organizations, researchers, development partners, and responsible tourism stakeholders to protect one of the world's most extraordinary mountain ecosystems.
This collaborative effort has helped conserve iconic wildlife, including the elusive Snow Leopard, Himalayan Ibex, Blue Sheep, and Markhor, while safeguarding fragile habitats and strengthening local communities.
Community conservation is about much more than wildlife. It is about creating sustainable livelihoods, reducing human-wildlife conflict, restoring habitats, supporting local institutions, and ensuring that future generations inherit healthy mountains and thriving ecosystems.
Responsible eco-tourism also has an important role to play. Wildlife observation, conservation photography, scientific research, and educational expeditions create meaningful experiences for visitors while generating income for local communities and reinforcing the value of conserving nature.
Together, we can ensure that our mountains remain a source of pride, inspiration, and opportunity for generations to come.
