Two of our interns joined the Kazimierz Tour and kindly shared their impressions with us 😊✨

The trip around Kraków's Kazimierz district was very informative and valuable. We were accompanied by a tour guide, who told us about the history of Kraków's Jewish community, its culture and traditions in an engaging and easy-to-understand way.

During the tour, we visited the most important synagogues and learned about the history of places connected with Kraków's Jewish community. The guide shared a lot of interesting information and answered our questions. Thanks to this trip, we were able to learn more about the history of Kazimierz and Kraków. It was a memorable living history lesson, so I think it is definitely worth taking part in such a tour.

Who is this guy? 🤔

Crowds of tourists walk past him every day, but do you know who he actually is? 👀

The statue of Adam Mickiewicz in the Main Square has stood here since 1898 (the 100th anniversary of the poet's birth) 🗽. Mickiewicz was Poland's greatest Romantic poet ✍️, author of "Pan Tadeusz" 📖. For Poles, he's a bit like Shakespeare is for the British 🇬🇧 or Goethe for the Germans 🇩🇪.

It's one of Kraków's most popular meeting spots 📍. Generations of locals have arranged to meet "under Adaś" (as Poles affectionately call the statue) 💛. However, it's debatable whether it's still so easy to find each other amid the crowds in the middle of the square 😅

Fun fact: Mickiewicz never actually set foot in Kraków 🤯, yet his monument stands right here, funded by public donations from across Poland 🇵🇱

Today marks World Tourism Day 🌍✈️

The past year brought around 1.52 billion tourists worldwide 📈. That’s nearly 60 million more than the year before! Great for the industry, but it also means more strain on the environment 🌱, rising costs for residents 💸, and crowded hotspots 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️.

This year's theme is AI 🤖. As algorithms shape more of our travel choices, a few risks come with that:

🔹 Crowds funnelled into the same recommended spots, while equally worthwhile places stay overlooked.
🔹 Quick photo stops instead of real understanding of a place 📸.
🔹 Money bypassing small, local businesses.

That's not the direction we'd want tourism to head in. As people working in this industry, we want to help build awareness among travellers, encouraging conscious, responsible choices about where and how they go. And, above all, we want hospitality and genuine curiosity about the world to stay at the heart of it 💚

A few ways to travel more thoughtfully 🌿

✅ Go where genuinely draws you in, not wherever pops up first online.
✅ Tap into local knowledge 🗣️: nobody knows a place better than the people who live there.
✅ Skip the high season 🗓️: fewer crowds, easier access, and photos without strangers photobombing you 😉

Kraków's Main Square in 5 facts 🏛️

🇨🇭 𝗜𝘁'𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘄𝗶𝘁𝘇𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱!

Laid out in 1257, the square predates the Swiss Confederation, founded in 1291.

🏚️ 𝗡𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝟭𝟯𝘁𝗵-𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝘆 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱.

Fires, wars, and remodels means most facades you see today date from the 19th century. However, a few buildings, like the Gothic Hetmańska townhouse, still hide medieval vaults underneath.

😈 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲'𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗹'𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗛𝗮𝗹𝗹.

Look closely at the arcade pillars, and you'll find deep claw marks. Legend says the devil left them, punishing a merchant who cheated his customers.

🎭 𝗔 𝗰𝗮𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝟳𝟬 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴.

Since 1956, Piwnica pod Baranami has hosted Kraków's poets and musicians in 15th-century cellars just off the square. It's one of Europe's longest continuously running cabarets. Today it still holds regular concerts of poetry, satire, and song, same cellar, new performers each generation.

A few meters below the cobblestones lies a preserved layer of medieval Kraków: stalls, streets, even an old graveyard. And you can see this! Curious? Come to buy your ticket for the Underground of Rynek Główny and walk through 700 years of history in one afternoon.
