Quick Travel Guide to Zakopane & Tatra Mountains (Spring–Autumn Edition)
by Krakow Together
Overview
Zakopane is Poland’s mountain escape, set at the foot of the Tatra Mountains. It’s one of the most popular trips from Kraków, known for its stunning scenery, traditional highlander culture, thermal baths, and outdoor adventures.
Whether you’re visiting for a day or longer, Zakopane offers a great mix of views, relaxation, and experiences — and with the right plan, you can fit a lot into one trip.
⸻
Top Outdoor Highlights
Morskie Oko
The most famous lake in Poland. A beautiful but long (~8 km) walk through forested valleys. Best done early in the morning.
Five Polish Ponds Valley
Quieter and more scenic, with multiple alpine lakes. A great option if you prefer fewer crowds.
Kasprowy Wierch
Cable car access to high mountain views at 1,987 m. From here you can explore ridge trails.
Gubałówka Hill
Quick and easy access via funicular from Zakopane town. Great views and a relaxed, tourist-friendly atmosphere.
Tatra National Park
Over 275 km of trails — from easy walks like Kościeliska Valley to more demanding hikes like Rysy.
⸻
Sky Walk Poronin
One of the newest attractions in the area, located just outside Zakopane.
• 854m elevated walkway
• Glass viewing platform with 360° views
• Family-friendly features along the route
A great option if you want panoramic views without a long hike.
⸻
Thermal Baths — A Must-Do
After exploring the mountains, thermal baths are one of the best ways to relax — and for many visitors, this becomes the highlight of the trip.
👉 Our top recommendation: Terma Bania (Białka Tatrzańska)
• Indoor & outdoor pools with mountain views
• Separate zones for relaxation and fun
• Swim-up bars, saunas, and wellness areas
👉 This is consistently the best all-round experience in the region and the option most of our guests prefer.
⸻
Other options:
Termy Chochołowskie – The largest complex, with extensive facilities but often busy
Termy Bukovina – A more relaxed, premium atmosphere
Gorący Potok – Natural-style sulfur pools with a different, more rustic feel
⏰ Most open 09:00–22:00
👉 Tip: go earlier in the day or midweek where possible
⸻
What to Eat in Zakopane
Zakopane food is very different from Kraków — more rustic, filling, and perfect after a day outdoors.
Oscypek (must try)
Smoked sheep cheese, best grilled with cranberry
Kwaśnica
Traditional sour cabbage soup with pork ribs
Placki ziemniaczane
Potato pancakes, often served with goulash
Baranina (lamb)
A regional speciality
Grilled kiełbasa
Simple but very good from local stalls
Moskol
Traditional flatbread, often served warm with butter or toppings
👉 Expect generous portions — this is proper mountain food.
⸻
Zakopane Town Highlights
Krupówki Street
The main street for shops, restaurants, and atmosphere
Zakopane wooden architecture
Unique regional style — worth noticing as you walk around
Oscypek stalls
You’ll find them all over town — try it freshly grilled
Willa Koliba & local museums
A good insight into Zakopane’s history and style
⸻
Getting There from Kraków
Zakopane is around 2–3 hours from Kraków.
You can travel independently by bus or train — both are similar in price and arrive centrally.
👉 This allows you to:
• Walk Krupówki
• Visit Gubałówka
• Explore the town
But in practice, this gives you a fairly basic experience.
⸻
Why most visitors choose a tour
Most people want to see more than just the town — and that’s where tours make a big difference.
With an organised tour, you can include:
• Gubałówka views
• Traditional cheese tasting
• Scenic stops along the way
• Thermal baths (Terma Bania)
• Or Sky Walk Poronin
👉 Once you plan to visit thermal baths or multiple locations, a tour becomes the easiest and most efficient option.
⸻
Add Adventure: Quad Bikes
For something more active, Zakopane is also perfect for quad bike (ATV) experiences.
• Off-road mountain trails
• Forest routes and viewpoints
• Suitable for beginners but still exciting
👉 This is one of the best ways to turn a standard trip into something memorable.
