Tomorrow night, Ponte de Lima turns the lights on

Feiras Novas start tomorrow and run through 14 September. This is the 200th year.

A lot of visitors wait for Saturday’s ethnographic cortejo at 15:30. Tomorrow night is quieter, and that is when the town actually begins.

From Porto the drive is about an hour. Park outside the historic centre and walk in. Most people still arrive on foot over the long stone bridge.

Concertinas go through the streets at 21:30. The lights come on at 22:30. Check feirasnovas.pt on the day, in case the hours move.

Saturday 12 September is the cortejo etnográfico. Sunday 13 is the historical cortege for the bicentenary.

This is the kind of North evening we like: one town, no rush, and a quiet electric drive home.

Today at VINDOURO, the square is the tasting hall

São João da Pesqueira is in the 24th VINDOURO this weekend. Today is Saturday, 5 September. Praça do Marquês.

The Salão de Vinhos opens at 15:00 and runs to 21:00. The Mercado Pombalino opens at 14:00 at Palácio do Cabo. The municipality updated this programme on 2 September.

If you go for the talks: Douro whites at 15:00, Port at 17:00, Douro reds at 19:30. Raquel Sousa is listed for all three.

Carolina Deslandes is on Palco Vindouro at 22:00. Fire and juggling at Palácio do Cabo at 21:30.

The Cortejo Pombalino is Sunday at 17:00, from Avenida Marquês de Soveral to Palácio do Cabo. Do not plan it for tonight.

Nelas has the Dão town fair the same weekend. That is a different plateau. Pick one evening.

If you taste, let someone else drive the schist roads after.

From Friday, Nelas opens the Dão on the square

Today in Nelas is for the trade. From tomorrow, the 35th Feira do Vinho do Dão is on Praça do Município for everyone.

It is a walk-in town fair on the granite plateau, about 90 minutes inland from Porto. The municipality lists free entry. Local reporting this week: about 40 producers. Stands from 16:00 Friday, 14:30 Saturday, 13:00 Sunday. Check Visit Nelas or the Câmara page on the day.

You are on granite, inland from the Douro. Touriga Nacional grew up on this plateau. Encruzado if you want a white with texture.

Saturday, Rui Veloso is listed at 22:00. Confirm access before you plan dinner around it.

VINDOURO in São João da Pesqueira runs the same Friday to Sunday, on the river. Different valley. If you drive, give Nelas its own evening.

The booked Dão weekend is later: Portas Abertas, 11–12 September, eight quintas. Different format.

Taste, then let someone else drive.

Viseu this weekend: old town first, then the fair

São Mateus is still on in Viseu. The fair runs through 6 September at Campo de Viriato.

Tonight Os Quatro e Meia play the main stage. Check times and tickets on feirasaomateus.pt before you go.

Viseu is about 130 km from Porto. The motorway takes roughly an hour and a half.

Walk the granite streets and the cathedral square while the light is still easy. Then walk over to the fair for the stalls and the night noise.

If you only have one evening, treat the concert as the extra, not the whole trip.

This weekend the Douro celebrates its oxheart tomato

Wine gets the headlines. In August the valley also celebrates coração de boi — a large, meaty tomato with thin skin and few seeds.

Tomorrow, 21 August, the 11th contest is at Quinta do Mourão, on the river in Cambres (Lamego). Daytime judging is for producers and the jury.

The open gathering is Saturday 22 August from 17:30 in Arroios, just outside Vila Real: tomato with salt and olive oil, a small market, and local wine.

More than 30 Douro restaurants still have tomato dishes on the menu through August.

If you are in the North this weekend, leave room for a tomato plate.

Amarante: a calmer North day between Porto and the valley

Not every great North Portugal day has to be a full Douro push. Amarante, on the Tâmega, is a softer rhythm: river paths, the old bridge, São Gonçalo, and a town centre you can enjoy without racing the clock.

We like it as a “breathe” day — fewer hairpin terraces, more time on foot, easier parking mindset, and roads that suit an unhurried electric drive from Porto (about an hour, traffic depending).

Simple shape that works:
1. Morning arrival and bridge / river walk
2. São Gonçalo while it is open
3. Long lunch
4. Slow return or a single extra stop only if energy remains

If your trip is stacked with big landscapes, build in one town like this. The photos are quieter. The day often feels better.

Ponte de Lima’s market — a local ritual worth planning around

A slip in this post: Ponte de Lima’s famous traditional fair is not on Fridays.

The main Feira Quinzenal runs on Mondays, every two weeks (not weekly), on the riverbank — one of Portugal’s oldest market traditions. Always check the current year’s calendar before you go, because it is fortnightly, not every Monday.

There are also separate Sunday antiques/flea and craft markets in town on set weekends, plus the municipal market for everyday shopping.
