A little behind the scenes of being a Travel Advisor ✈️📚

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working my way through the Silversea Academy training, and tomorrow I’m ready to take my final exam and earn my Silversea certification! 🛳️🥂

Something I don’t think people always realize about being a Travel Advisor is just how much ongoing education happens behind the scenes.

Experience is a huge part of what I do, travelling, experiencing resorts, cruise lines and destinations firsthand but product knowledge is just as important. Knowing the brands I sell, understanding the differences between ships, resorts, destinations, fare types and inclusions, and knowing what is going to be the right fit for each individual client takes a LOT of learning.

On top of researching trips, preparing quotes, making bookings, managing payments and looking after all the little details for my clients, there are hours and hours spent completing supplier training, certifications, webinars and keeping up with an industry that is constantly changing.

Because when you trust me with your vacation, I don’t just want to book your trip I want to actually know what I’m selling and why I’m recommending it to you. ❤️

✈️ A little travel tip from someone who’s learned the hard way! 💊

One thing I ALWAYS recommend when travelling is bringing a few essential medications with you in your carry-on! Allergy meds, cold medication, Advil, Band-Aids… the little things you might not think about until you REALLY need them. 😂

I learned this lesson the hard way when I had a horrible sinus cold while travelling home from Japan and had an 8-hour layover in Amsterdam. I went looking for cold medication at the airport pharmacy, only to be told I needed a prescription. Trying to contact my doctor back in Canada with the time difference? Not exactly an option. So I suffered. 🤧

I just picked up this compact little medication kit from Amazon, and I LOVE how everything fits neatly together. Perfect for tossing into my carry-on so I have the essentials on hand when I need them.

My travel tip: Don’t assume you’ll be able to find your usual medications abroad. What’s available over the counter at home might require a prescription somewhere else!

Ireland surprised me… 🇮🇪☘️

I’ll be honest,before I went, I pictured Ireland as mostly cozy pubs, Guinness and Irish music. 🍻 What I didn’t expect was to completely fall in love with the scenery, the people and the contrast between lively Dublin and the beautiful Irish countryside.

This was an incentive trip I earned through Aloette Cosmetics, and getting to experience Ireland firsthand was incredible.

We loved exploring Dublin, trying an Irish wh***ey blending experience and, surprisingly, the *Guinness Storehouse* and I don’t even drink b**r! It ended up being one of my favourite experiences.

Then came Killarney, the rolling green countryside and the Cliffs of Moher😍 Absolutely breathtaking. Mark is terrified of heights and skipped kissing the Blarney Stone 😂, but even he couldn’t stop talking about how beautiful Ireland was.

One thing I learned? Distances, pacing and transportation really matter in Ireland. Having a driver meant we could relax and enjoy those gorgeous views instead of navigating the narrow, winding roads ourselves!

That’s one of my favourite parts of travelling, coming home with firsthand knowledge that helps me plan better trips for my clients.

Ireland, I would happily come back. 🇮🇪

I went to the Azores expecting beaches. There are none. I came home with a pineapple tattoo and the best risotto of my life. Let me explain. 🍍

Four islands. Two weeks. One trip that completely changed how I think about travel.

My husband was born on São Jorge, a tiny island famous for its cheese and its cows. We heard roosters every single morning. We ate beef five days in a row. My stomach was not prepared. 😅 But seeing the home where he grew up? That part I’ll never forget.

Then Pico for hiking and w**e, dominated by that incredible mountain. ⛰️

Then Madeira, closest to Morocco, with some of the most amazing food I’ve ever had in my life. Warm, high-end, and yes, Cristiano Ronaldo is absolutely worshipped there.

Then São Miguel stole my whole heart. 🌿 Some of the best risotto I’ve ever eaten, and I’m comparing it to Italy. A pineapple plantation. Natural hot springs. Volcanic landscapes everywhere you look. I would go back tomorrow.

Here’s what the brochures don’t tell you 👇

🪨 No sandy beaches. These islands are dramatic, rocky Atlantic coastline. Natural pools carved into the rock, yes. Sand between your toes, no.

🚗 You need a car on most islands. The roads are winding and steep. Motion sickness is real.

⏱️ Four islands in two weeks felt rushed, and I like to move fast. Two islands is the sweet spot for a week-long trip.

✈️ Inter-island flights on SATA have to be booked carefully so everything lines up. And fog can shut it all down without warning.

The Azores don’t fit the mold. That’s exactly why you should go.

We landed in Seoul on the last port day of our cruise, and I had the whole day planned. Researched an authentic Korean barbecue spot, felt prepared. Then Google Maps stopped working entirely. We had a paper map and absolutely no idea where we were going. 😅

Honestly? It was a little scary at first.

Then we spotted another couple on the street who looked just as lost as we were. We started talking. And then we just... spent the whole day together, wandering Seoul, figuring it out as we went. We still follow each other on social media. It ended up being one of my favourite days out of the whole trip.

That is the thing about travel that no guidebook can teach you.

This was our first time in Asia, my husband and I, and I won't pretend I wasn't nervous. Long flight, completely unfamiliar culture, a food scene I genuinely didn't know if I could handle. In Osaka I ate deep-fried octopus balls on a food tour and thought they were amazing. But I also ordered sushi at an authentic Japanese restaurant and the fish was still kind of moving on the plate. It really freaked me out. I didn't eat fish for months after we got home. 😂

Both of those things are true, and both of them are exactly why I needed to go.

We chose a 12-day Norwegian cruise starting in Taipei and ending in Seoul, with stops throughout Japan, and that structure made all the difference. Knowing we could always come back to the ship if we needed something familiar made us braver when we were out exploring. We tried more. We wandered further. We said yes more often.

I also didn't expect how much the culture itself would stay with me. There are no garbage cans anywhere on the streets in Japan because of security concerns, so people just carry their garbage home or tuck it in their pockets. The cities were spotless in a way I've never seen anywhere else. Little details like that shifted something in how I think about travel.

Osaka was our favourite city. Taipei surprised us so much we wished we'd arrived three days earlier instead of one. And Seoul, well, Seoul gave us an unexpected friendship and a story I'll be telling for years.

If you've been curious about Asia but nervous about the logistics, or if the food alone has been enough to put you off, I genuinely get it. I felt the same way. And now I know exactly what to look for when I'm putting this trip together for someone else.
