Today we were treated to a very special encounter — a mother Bryde’s whale together with her calf. Witnessing this rare and tender sight is always moving, as it offers a glimpse into the strong bond between mother and offspring, and a reminder of the importance of protecting these giants so future generations can thrive.

💡 Scientific Fact:
Bryde’s whales are warm-water specialists, preferring tropical and subtropical seas. Unlike many other baleen whales, they don’t migrate long distances to colder feeding grounds, making sightings with calves even more remarkable in these waters.

Highlight of the Day:
Although the morning conditions kept us on land due to low visibility and swell, the afternoon made up for everything. The ocean came alive, and in just a few hours we were able to spot five different species! From dolphins filling the water with energy to the majestic presence of s***m whales, the sea reminded us how quickly it can change — and how rewarding patience can be.

💡 Scientific Fact:
The Azores are considered one of the best places in the world to see so many different species of cetaceans — with more than 25 different species recorded in these waters throughout the year.

Highlight of the Day:
The stars of today’s trip were without doubt the striped dolphins. We encountered a large, active group that treated us to an incredible show — leaping high above the water in powerful, acrobatic jumps. Their energy and speed lit up the ocean, leaving everyone on board in awe of their strength and elegance. A species not always encountered as they are usually found more offshore, so what a joy! 🌊

💡 Scientific Fact:
Striped dolphins are among the fastest of all dolphin species, reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h. Their characteristic leaps are not only spectacular but also believed to help them communicate, socialize, and even remove parasites from their skin.

Highlight of the Day:
Today we witnessed something truly unforgettable — an enormous group of Atlantic spotted dolphins, well over 1,000 individuals! The ocean surface came alive as far as the eye could see, with dolphins leaping, splashing, and filling the horizon with movement. Being surrounded by such a massive pod is an overwhelming experience, showing the incredible richness and energy of the Azorean waters.

💡 Scientific Fact:
Large dolphin groups, like the one we saw today, are often called superpods. These gatherings can happen when food is particularly abundant, and they not only help dolphins feed efficiently but also strengthen their social bonds.
