Daily Sightings – June 14, 2026

✅ S***m whales
✅ Sei whales
✅ Common dolphins
✅ Atlantic spotted dolphins

Another day spent with the Green Social Unit of our resident gentle giants: the s***m whales. The first tail our biologists´ trained eyes recognised was of Sumo Wrestler. She is a well known adult female often seen tending calves, or with her two trusted companions: Dilys and Hailey.

S***m whales have stable, matrilineal social units, with adult females and offspring living together for life, while males disperse at adolescence. It is a priviledge to be able to witness, follow, learn and grow, alongside these known whales and their families.

Daily Sightings – June 12, 2026

✅ S***m whale
✅ Sei whale
✅ Common dolphin
✅ Bottlenose dolphin
✅ Striped dolphin

Incredible sea conditions bring amazing sightings. Today it felt like these summer days that everythings goes as planned and the ocean shows you how life always finds a way. We could presence beautiful and large groups of common dolphins sharing some time with striped dolphins. And of course our always curious bottlenose dolphins showed up around us giving us the opportunity to see how playful these dolphins can be. Besides, we got to see two Sei whales spending some time together proving that whales also can show some social behaviours.

However, our trips were marked by the sightings of our well-know Green Group of S***m whales with Hailey and her calf, Dilys, Sumo Wrestler and another indivual, all of them seen some days ago, reinforcing the importance of family in these animals.

Daily Sightings – June 10, 2026
✅ Bryde's whales
✅ S***m whales
✅ Sei whales
✅ Humpback whale
✅ Risso's dolphins
✅ Common dolphins
✅ Bottlenose dolphins

We're not even sure where to focus today: seven different species in a single day! It’s a lot!
But if there’s a clear highlight, it’s that summer has definitely arrived.
We had our first sighting of a Bryde’s whale (pronounced roughly “broodus”), a tropical species named after the Norwegian whaler Johan Bryde. A new presence for the season, and one we’ll need to pay close attention to, as they can easily be confused with sei whales at sea.

Seven species, one day. Days like this don’t happen often!

Originally from the Netherlands, Niels’ fascination with cetaceans began when he was very little, but it was during a minor in Arctic Marine Biology in Norway that his path became clear. After his first encounter with s***m whales in the cold northern waters, he knew his academic career had to be steered toward the behavioral ecology of these majestic giants.

Currently an Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management student at Wageningen University & Research, Niels has joined the Futurismo team for his final research internship. He is shifting his focus from the deep-diving giants to the charismatic bottlenose dolphins, delving into the intricate world of marine bioacoustics.

Niels’ research is particularly specialized, focusing on "signature whistles", the unique acoustic identifiers that dolphins use to communicate. For him, being in the Azores and working directly with these animals is a true dream come true, allowing him to contribute meaningful data to the study of dolphin behavior in one of the world's best marine sanctuaries.

🌍 Scientist. Researcher. Ocean Advocate. Niels represents a new generation of biologists dedicated to decoding the ocean’s language to better understand and protect its inhabitants.
