📚 5 UNIQUE BOOKS TO READ BEFORE YOUR RUSSIAN ADVENTURE 🇷🇺

Looking to explore Russia through fresh eyes and stories you haven’t already heard of? These hidden literary gems offer fascinating, unique perspectives on the country’s people, culture, and landscapes. Perfect companions to spark your wanderlust!

1. The Summer Garden by Paullina Simons
This epic love story spans decades and continents, rooted deeply in Soviet Russia. A mix of romance, history, and human resilience that will leave you feeling like you’ve walked the streets of Leningrad yourself.

2. Natasha's Dance: A Cultural History of Russia by Orlando Figes
A beautiful, sweeping journey through Russian culture. Figes captures the essence of Russian art, music, and traditions in a way that’s both accessible and deeply engaging.

3. Among the Russians by Colin Thubron
Thubron’s travelogue is an honest, poetic account of his solo journey through Russia during the late Soviet era. It’s filled with raw impressions and surprising moments that offer a personal lens into the country.

4. Snowdrops by A.D. Miller
A gripping novel that blends mystery and moral ambiguity, set in modern-day Moscow. Perfect for readers looking for a contemporary (and darkly intriguing) take on life in Russia.

5. In Siberia by Colin Thubron
Yes, another book by Thubron, but this one takes you deep into the vast, mysterious expanse of Siberia. It’s an exploration of remote villages, ancient traditions, and the human spirit in the face of harsh landscapes.

🎄 WHILE THE WORLD IS BACK TO WORK, RUSSIA IS STILL IN FULL CELEBRATION MODE! 🎄

Orthodox Christmas, observed on January 7th, brings with it a unique blend of spirituality, tradition, and fun. Let me share some fascinating Russian Christmas traditions with you! 🎅✨

⛪ 1. The Christmas All-Night Service
Christmas celebrations begin with the beautiful All-Night Service on January 6th. Churches glow with candlelight and resonate with hymns, as families gather to honor this sacred night. Afterward, everyone exchanges warm greetings and heads home, filled with joy and peace.

✨ 2. Christmas Fortune-Telling
This ancient pagan tradition is still alive! On Christmas Eve, Russian girls come together for fortune-telling rituals to glimpse their future—marriage, success, and more! While it’s all in good fun, the shared laughter and camaraderie make this tradition a cherished highlight. 💫

🍽️ 3. The Christmas Feast
Christmas Eve is special, and dinner starts only after the first star appears in the sky. The meal begins with “sochevo”, a wheat porridge, followed by dishes like honey gingerbread and poppy rolls. Alcohol and meat are avoided, but the focus is on sharing food and joy with loved ones.

🎺 4. Carols and Festivities
Although caroling is rare in cities, it remains beloved in smaller towns. Known as Christmastide, the period from Christmas to Epiphany is filled with songs, dances, and celebrations. In the past, people dressed up, played games, and rolled down snowy hills, spreading joy and laughter everywhere.

One More Russia's Gift to the World: Not Only Ballet, Tolstoy, and Matryoshka! 🌍

When you think of Russia’s contributions to global culture, you might picture world-class ballet or the profound works of Tolstoy and Dostoevsky. But there’s another Russian invention that continues to bring joy to both children and adults alike — Russian Mountains! ❄️

These thrilling rides have a rich history dating back to pre-Petrine Russia, where ice slides were a beloved winter pastime for all social classes. Built by teams of young craftsmen, they were grand wooden structures with steep slopes covered in ice. Imagine sliding down a 25-meter-high slope with an incline as sharp as 50 degrees! Sounds exhilarating, right? 😲

By the 18th century, St. Petersburg became famous for its double-sloped ice slides, while in villages, people would simply pour water over a hillside to create a frozen track. No expensive gear required — early "sleds" ranged from animal hides to woven baskets and even simple planks of wood.

Did you know that sliding down an ice hill had a symbolic meaning, too? It was believed to awaken the earth from its winter slumber, promising children faster growth, newlyweds a happy marriage, and elders a longer life.

But Russia didn’t stop there. The legendary "Katalskaya Gorka" (Sliding Hill) of Tsarskoye Selo took things to the next level. Built under Empress Catherine the Great, it wasn't just a hill — it was a luxurious, year-round ride with wheeled carriages gliding down smooth wooden rails. This marvel of engineering became so famous that it inspired a revolution in entertainment far beyond Russia's borders.

How, you ask? In 1813, Russian soldiers in Paris set up an ice slide on the River Seine. Parisians were hooked! Soon, similar slides were built, but since Paris didn't have Russia’s freezing winters, they used wheeled carts on rails instead of ice. Thus, the first "Russian Mountains" were born — and when the idea crossed the Atlantic to America, they became known as "roller coasters." 🎢 Yes, that’s right — the modern roller coaster owes its origins to Russia’s icy winter fun.

This year, something truly special awaits visitors to St. Petersburg — a giant 8-meter-tall ice slide, completely free to ride, right on Palace Square! This iconic location has never been so exciting. Just imagine sliding down with the stunning backdrop of one of Russia's most beautiful landmarks. A true winter fairytale! ❄️✨

❄️ Join us for a ride! ❄️ As part of our winter tours, we invite you to experience the pure joy of sliding down a traditional Russian ice hill.

RUSSIAN WINTER: COLDER THAN MARS❄

Today is December 2st, and Russian winter has officially begun! Let’s take a look at just how cold it can get! 🧐

In Moscow, today’s temperature is around 0°C (32°F). The city’s record low of -42.2°C (-43.6°F) was set in 1940. However, due to global warming, winters in central Russia are now relatively mild.

Surprisingly, St. Petersburg is usually warmer than Moscow. The absolute minimum temperature there was -35.6°C (-32.1°F), also recorded in 1940. Today, it’s cloudy ☁, wet 🌧, and the temperature is holding at +3°C (37°F).

Now we are going to Murmansk, the Russian Arctic capital. Today, daytime temperatures in Murmansk are at -3°C (26.6°F). If you’re planning to hunt for the Northern Lights, make sure to dress warmly! ✨✨✨

Now, let’s move on to Oymyakon, the coldest permanently inhabited town in the world. Today’s average temperature is -30°C (-22°F). Sounds cold, right? How about this: Oymyakon’s record low of -77.8°C (-108.04°F), set in 1932, is colder than the average surface temperature on Mars (-62°C/-80°F)! Oymyakon is located in Sakha (Yakutia), the land of diamonds—and we can take you there!

Feeling chilly? Let’s warm up! From Yakutia, we’re flying to Sochi, Russia’s warmest city 🏖. The distance between the two cities is 5,839 km (3,628 miles). Today, the temperature in Sochi is a pleasant +12°C (54°F)—a 40-degree difference! Isn’t that amazing?

Why Visit Russia in Winter?

Winter in Russia is a magical experience like no other! From the enchanting snow-covered landscapes and frozen rivers to the dazzling festive lights of Moscow and St. Petersburg, every corner feels like a winter wonderland.

You can witness the breathtaking Northern Lights in Murmansk, explore the world's coldest town, Oymyakon, or enjoy winter sports in Sochi's ski resorts. Winter traditions like Russian baths (banya), ice skating on Red Square, and cozying up with a steaming cup of tea from a samovar make it unforgettable.

And the best part? We offer the most amazing tours across Russia, designed to make your winter journey truly unforgettable. Come for the adventure, the culture, and the beauty—you won’t regret it!

5 MOST AMAZING NATURE RESERVES IN RUSSIA

Hi all nature lovers. Today I'm going to tell you about the most interesting nature reserves in Russia and their unusual features.

⭐ Great Arctic Nature Reserve
The nearest airport is Norilsk (NSK).

This nature reserve is the largest not only in Russia but also in Eurasia, with an area of 41,692.22 sq. km, the size of Switzerland. The reserve is home to wild polar bears. Most of the reserve is inaccessible and never visited by people. Many parts of the reserve can be reached only by air and only when the weather allows. We can take you there in the summer to see its unique beauty. If you are brave and well-fit, we offer rafting on the Efremov River located here.

⭐ Wrangel Island
The nearest airport is Pevek (PWE).

The reserve on Wrangel Island is one of the northernmost in the world. The weather here is severe. The winds and blizzards can rush at speeds up to 140 km/h. The minimum temperature on the island is minus 57°C, the maximum is only plus 18°C. The island is covered with snow 9 months a year. Definitely, it is not a resort. The remains of small mammoths were found here, most likely due to the lack of food on the island. The island is inhabited by about 30 species of arthropods. Due to harsh weather conditions, most animals are simply not able to live here. Freshwater lakes are empty; there are no fish in them at all. Only thousands of walruses enjoy the beaches of Wrangel Island. In 2004, this preserve was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

⭐ Kronotsky Nature Reserve, Kamchatka
The nearest airport is Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (PKS).

The reserve is rightfully considered the "hottest" in Russia: the famous Valley of Geysers is located here, as well as 25 volcanoes, eight of which are active. Some herbs growing on the territory of the reserve can reach four meters in height! This is quite enough to hide not only any animal but also a rider on a horse. The Kronotsky Nature Reserve has its own Death Valley. For a long time, scientists could not understand what caused the sudden death of animals, birds, and insects here. At the same time, people do not experience any adverse effects. The reason was a gas containing a lot of hydrogen sulfide, carbon disulfide, and carbon dioxide, rising from the very depths of the volcano and creeping along the ground. The reserve is one of the oldest nature reserves in Russia, established in 1882.

⭐ Barguzinsky Nature Reserve
The nearest airport is Ulan Ude (UUD).

Here in the middle of Siberia, you can see amazing creations of nature — hot springs with water temperatures from 40 to 65°C. The wildlife is striking in its diversity. You can meet a bear, a fox, a wolverine, a lynx, an elk, and a deer in the reserve. You can watch 265 species of birds — gulls, gray cranes, wagtails, even flamingos, and stone grouse. At the Wild Boars' cordon, sables live almost like cats. Often they arrange themselves in the hands of the guests of the reserve, bask in the sun, and feed from their hands.

⭐ Altai Nature Reserve
The nearest airport is Gorno-Altaysk (RGK).

The Altai Nature Reserve includes most of the water area of Lake Teletskoye — 52%. The lake has strategic importance as it provides drinking water for the whole of Siberia. Its depth in some places reaches 325 m. About 70 rivers and twice as many temporary watercourses flow into the lake, and only one river takes its source — Biya. The largest and most beautiful waterfalls of Altai, Uchar and Korbu, are located on the territory of the reserve. The fauna of the Altai Nature Reserve includes almost sixty rare or endangered animal species that are protected by law. The climate of the Altai Nature Reserve combines the features of mountain and continental climates, making it unique.
