🌿 A Journey Along the River Kwai with a Heartwarming Mission 🐘💛

Sometimes, meaningful moments happen where we least expect them.
During one of our recent RV River Kwai cruises, a guest shared an extraordinary encounter that has since blossomed into an act of kindness for one very special elephant.

On a visit to the Somboon Legacy Foundation—a fully ethical elephant sanctuary in Kanchanaburi caring for four elderly elephants aged 60–90—our guest learned about Kham Phaeng, a 60-year-old rescued elephant still healing from past injuries. Knowing the powerful healing qualities of high-grade Manuka honey, he offered a simple yet compassionate suggestion: use the honey to help her wounds recover.

✨ This small idea grew into something beautiful.
Asian Trails received Manuka honey from the guest, and on the first CruiseAsia RV River Kwai departure of the season, our team personally delivered it to the sanctuary. They were present as the precious honey was gently applied to Kham Phaeng’s wound — a touching moment that underlined the genuine care behind ethical tourism.

At CruiseAsia and Asian Trails, responsible travel is more than a promise; it’s a practice. Our elephant-related excursions follow strict ethical standards:

✔️ No forced bathing with tourists
✔️ Positive mahout-elephant relationships

During a recent audit, our team observed the elephants bathing freely by the riverside, watched from a respectful distance. Calm, healthy, and lovingly cared for by their devoted mahouts, all four elephants are living in a safe environment that mirrors the wild—something Kham Phaeng never had before.

Beyond observing the elephants, visitors at the Somboon Legacy Foundation can explore an excellent educational center, learn how elephant dung is transformed into paper, join hands-on workshops, and understand the vital role of responsible sanctuaries in Thailand.
