From 1 October 2026, all eligible foreign visitors entering Mainland Tanzania will be required to have valid Inbound Travel Insurance, in accordance with the Insurance (Inbound Travel Insurance) Regulations, 2026 – Government Notice No. 256.

The requirement applies to travellers entering Tanzania through airports, seaports and land borders.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

Standard Adult Premium: USD 44 equivalent in TZS.

Validity: Up to 92 days, including multiple entries.

Purchase: Online before travel or upon arrival.

Cover: Emergency medical treatment, medical evacuation, repatriation and loss of luggage.

Infants 0 - 2: Free.

Children 3 - 17: 50% discount.

Groups of 10+: Adults receive 10% discount.

WHO IS EXEMPTED?

According to current NIC guidance, the following categories are exempt from the requirement:

Tanzanian residents
Holders of valid work or residence permits
Tanzanian diaspora
Diplomats
Transit passengers
Residents of EAC or SADC Partner States

If you are travelling to Mainland Tanzania from 1 October 2026, please ensure you arrange the required Inbound Travel Insurance before your journey.

The Great Wildebeest Migration is a year-round, 800-km+ clockwise cycle where over 1.5 million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles traverse Tanzania's Serengeti and Kenya's Masai Mara for fresh grazing. Key events include February calving in the southern Serengeti and dramatic, crocodile-filled Mara River crossings from July to October
Migration Timeline and Location
• December – March (Southern Serengeti/Ndutu): The herds gather on the short-grass plains for the calving season, with half a million calves born around February.
• April – June (Central/Western Serengeti): The herds move north/northwest, mating occurs, and they face the Grumeti River crossing.
• July – October (Northern Serengeti/Masai Mara): The herds cross the treacherous Mara River into Kenya's Masai Mara, with peak crossings typically from late July to September.
• November – December (Return to Southern Serengeti): The herds return south to the Serengeti plains to repeat the cycle.
