Some sunsets ARE just better…

On the last night of our safari, 324 bird and 58 mammal species in, we watched as the first rains- always a big bluff, blew across the valley sending with it the scent of petrichor.

Here’s a question for fellow safari planners and guides out there; how many days do you need to stay in a camp to be able to have a slow morning and enjoy breakfast in camp?

We took a slow morning Ikuka Safari Camp and this is what we saw from breakfast:

A Ruaha queen high up on an arboreal throne.

Just because I’m into the birds, insects, and plants, doesn’t mean a leopard in a baobab tree doesn’t take my breath away. I’m fortunate to have guests who think the same as me, and so these sightings are like icing and not the cake.

What a privilege to see this specimen of a male Sable antelope in Usangu.

Seeing Sable in Tanzania normally means getting off the beaten path and venturing into Tsetse fly country. We found this relaxed male a few minutes after leaving Asilia’s Usangu camp, in amazing light.

When we began imagining a camp in Arusha National Park, one of the things that really excited us was the different realm of diversity that we could bring to the traditional safari circuit in northern Tanzania; diversity of activities, diversity in landscapes and habitat, and biodiversity.

Last night, we found a very cool animal. A carnivore that diverged from the carnivore lineage that would become the cats, hyenas and viverids about 44 million years ago. To get a mega-lifer like this, so close to home is really, really special. What more will we find?

What an incredible red! (Unedited)

I picked this feather up on a walk in Arusha National Park. It belonged to a Hartlaub’s turacco, a bird even non-birders can appreciate. Interestingly, the red in this feather comes from a unique pigments produced only in this family of birds, not a carotenoid like the orange, pinks and reds in other birds.

Some people call them sightings, but for me it’s more than that. It’s magic. Magic in everything from the larks singing in the background, the light, to the trust the mother has that we will not harm her cubs… and the privilege of being alone and being able to be silent, immersed,… present.

Guiding and finding things like this comes with huge responsibility. How close to get, how close to let them get, how long to stay…

It’s been a long time since I posted something. Part of me is just cringing at the AI influenced content pervading these platforms and trying to come to terms with what that means for me. Regardless… meanwhile… maybe whatever… life continues and there are things that are real. One of those things is the quality time that safari and escapades to the bush offers.
