A successful hunt in the wild.

Here, a lioness feeds on a wildebeest, one of the main prey animals for lions in the Serengeti.

Lionesses are skilled hunters, relying on patience, strength and surprise. They often hunt together when targeting larger prey, although they can also hunt alone.

A lion can eat a large amount of meat in one meal, helping it survive when the next successful hunt is uncertain.

Do lions really kill for fun?

Lions don’t always kill because they are hungry.

Sometimes, the movement of fleeing prey triggers their hunting instinct, even when they have already eaten.

Lions may also kill rival predators to reduce competition or protect their territory.

But do they kill for pleasure?

There is no clear scientific evidence that lions kill simply for fun. Their behaviour is usually linked to instinct, competition or survival.

Interestingly, lions spend much of their day resting to conserve energy because hunting requires considerable effort.

In the wild, not every kill is about hunger, and not every hunt ends with a meal.

Leopards and cheetahs share the same habitat, but they are also competitors. Both hunt similar prey, and encounters between them can sometimes be fatal.

Leopards are stronger and more powerful than cheetahs. Although cheetahs are built for speed, they are less equipped for direct confrontations with larger predators.

But why would a leopard kill a cheetah?

In the wild, predators don't only compete for food. They also compete for territory and hunting opportunities. Leopards may kill other carnivores to reduce competition, and sometimes they consume them.

Leopards are also excellent climbers. Carrying food into trees helps them keep it away from other predators and scavengers, particularly hyenas and lions.
