So what do you think our Wayo Africa team get up to in the quieter months? They don’t rest - far from it! It’s training season!!

Did you know that we have a guide trainer on staff year-round which means our Wayo Africa activity guides benefit from guiding coaching throughout the year?

Our training isn’t just learning about the flora and fauna - our staff receive career coaching to be able to progress through their guiding career and graduate through different stages. Safety also makes up a huge part of our training with mentors guiding them through activities and staged situations.

They don’t just sit in a classroom, they head out into the parks and villages. They are also encouraged to take part in community projects such as litter picking.

Trust in our team for your safari activities! You are in excellent hands.

Our Wayo Manyara Story

I’m often asked which wild place is my personal favourite. Without fail, my mind drifts back to the beach of the Endabash River. The rocks and the waterfall, the forest and the escarpment towering above it all. The river slowly snaking around its southern bend. Early morning light catching the escarpment as clouds spill out of the Marang Forest.

Elephants are never far away often already standing in the river. There’s usually a handful of old buffalo tucked into the shade, troops of baboons moving through the trees, and the lazy flight of hamerkop overhead, mixed with the calls of turacos and orioles. It’s a place that stays with you.

Lake Manyara National Park, together with Manyara Green Camp, is by far the most perfect place to start or finish any Northern Tanzanian safari. Manyara Green Camp is one of the very few camps in Tanzania where the wildlife truly comes to you. It’s an ideal beginning to a safari, with slower mornings to recover from travel, without ever feeling removed from nature or wildlife. In the same way, it’s the perfect place to decompress at the end of a journey, to slow down, reflect, and reset after the intensity of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro.

Manyara is too often measured against its much larger neighbours and unfairly labelled as less productive. In reality, it holds an extraordinary diversity of ecosystems within a remarkably compact area far more varied, kilometre for kilometre, than either Tarangire or the Serengeti. With new management in the park and successful invasive bush clearing over recent years, Manyara now feels noticeably more open, with daily lion and leopard sightings. Huge herds of elephants are once again moving into the open spaces too, reshaping the landscape and gradually opening up the park even further.

It’s a park that rewards time, patience, and perspective a perfect place for a ‘slow safari’.

Walking in the Serengeti makes one connect with wild places in a way few other activities allow. This was a two day walk in the Western Serengeti, along the Mbalageti a river and staying in the Wayo Walking Camp.

Magical Manyara! A few days in this stunning park yet again proved to me that this park delivers some of the best wildlife sightings and wilderness moments in Africa! Too often underestimated as a wildlife destination.

Tracking the Serengeti migration from the Western Serengeti to the South. The rains started this week and the park is turning green. The herds are starting to push south!

It is with great sadness that we, at Wayo Africa, heard of the passing of Iain Douglas-Hamilton. His books, stories and works have inspired us as we continue to support conservation efforts and guide training in Lake Manyara National Park, the location of Iain’s first research project. If you haven’t read Iain’s book, Among the Elephants, we highly recommend it. Some words from Jean…

I’ve spent a lifetime living in Lake Manyara National Park. I also raised my children there, one river north of where Ian lived. I still drive past his house often. Living in this park, one always lives under the shadow of this great man, who did so much for conservation. The world would be a far worse place if it weren’t for him and his family. Thank you, Iain. I will make sure your memory lives on in Manyara.

Good morning from Wayo Manyara Green Camp!

The park is dry currently but the Endabash river in our camp is still flowing, bringing all walks of life for a refreshing morning drink. Over breakfast, we shared the river with a herd of thirsty elephants, a troop of baboons taking a morning dip, buffalos enjoying sinking down into the cooling mud and some beautiful crested guinea fowl. There’s no need to even go on game drives at this camp; everything comes to us!

Such a wonderful evening last night at The Covent Garden Hotel celebrating 35 years of (SBS)

kindly shared her experience of taking part in our Trans-Serengeti Balloon Expedition which we ran in partnership with SBS and . Wayo Africa handled all the camps and ground operations to enable the film crew and guests to successfully fly from the eastern side of the Serengeti over to the west, landing on the shores of Lake Victoria over the course of 5 days.

Attending the event were also the founders who started the first flights in 1989. The logistics involved in getting balloons, fuel and teams into the remote Serengeti National Park celebrates the true intrepid attitudes of pioneering creatives at that time.

SBS is committed to remaining in balance with wildlife and tourism and, despite demand, are not increasing the number of balloons they now run in the Serengeti. A balance of once-in-a-lifetime experiences which is treated with the utmost respect to both the guests and the park itself.

Thanks to for hosting such a fantastic event; so wonderful to have a room full of so many industry friends, all passionate about encouraging innovative safari experiences.

Wayo Little Green Camp holds a special place in our hearts here at Wayo Africa. Harking back to our original Wayo Africa camps using only bucket showers and compost toilets, this camp boldly sits deep into remote areas and operates with an incredibly light-footprint.

Wayo Little Green Camp moves three times during the year migrating with the herds through the Serengeti National Park. The camp locations are on the edge of wilderness zones to allow us to also run walking safaris.

With only six tents, this little camp creates the feeling of almost a private camp with a personable crew and delicious food.
