Founded in 1875 as the Franz-Josephs-Universitรคt Czernowitz when Chernivtsi (Czernowitz) was the capital of the Duchy of . Sofiyivka is an arboretum located in the northern part of the City of , Oblast (Central ).

park was founded at the beginning of the 19th century. It accounts for over 2,000 types of trees and brush (local and exotic) among which are taxodium (marsh cypress), Weymouth Pine, tulip tree, platanus, ginkgo, and many others.

Today, the park is a popular recreational spot, annually visited by 300,000 visitors. Since 2000, it is listed on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites in Ukraine.
